I actually have somewhat of the opposite problem at home.... My dad has always been very thrifty to the point of being cheap. One of those ways that I think he's "cheap" is that he always considers price per item / measurement and buy whatever is lowest. And more often than not, the less expensive items in terms of price per item is packaged in bulk / "family size". Which if you are going to use all of that item, then that is truly the best deal. That was how he taught me to shop, so I've been doing that for awhile. However the problem with always buying bulk is that sometimes you won't use all of the item: the item expires before using it all, you only needed a few to complete a project, etc. So sometimes the bulk purchase is actually worse in terms of saving money. It's a case of being penny wise but dollar foolish; yes you may save a few cents per item buying in bulk, but you end up wasting a few dollars by throwing away half of the purchase. After I came to realize that, I stopped buying bulk (esp. for foods) when I couldn't foresee myself using all of the item / purchase before throwing it away. So not buying bulk is less about storage space and more about trying to be thrifty in the whole scheme of things.
