Men: Do You Have a Man Cave-or Want One? Why?
« on: August 04, 2016, 05:20:08 am »
I have heard so many men talk about having or wanting a man cave.  Please explain to me why you would want one as opposed to being with your family in the "family room"?  As far as I always knew, most men reigned supreme in the family room.  Now I have even heard of the "she-shed."  For those who may not have heard of this phenomenon, the she-shed is when an outdoor shed is turned into a room for the woman to get away from the family, I guess.

The point of a man-cave (at least for me) is that the family room is for the entire family. That means that if a guy wants to watch a movie, it has to be suitable for the family to view. The man-cave, then, is for the man to do whatever he wants (within reasonable limits). So he can feel free to invite some buddies over and watch a *bleep* action flick without offending the rest of the family. Or they can scream at the TV during a football game without distracting others. It isn't that I'd rather stay in a man-cave whenever I'm home, but that I'd sometimes would like to do something that the others in the house may not be as enthused about or should not be exposed to.

I don't have a man cave. I think when I get older and settle down with a family, I'll try my best to have one.

I would love to have a man cave and have been looking at buying a garage and turning it into a man cave. My jeep is my man vehicle as no one in the family can really figure out how to drive it. I am looking at a second old jeep and know that my wife would go ballistic id=f she had to look at it every day. Housing both jeeps in my man cave/garage would certainly alleviate some of her anxiety. It would also be a center where I could work uninterrupted on the weekends. I really only see my son about ten minutes a day, wife about fifteen minutes a day and daughter about thirty minutes a month but those sightings only occur when they are in dire need of more money and have to go through a dramatic prelude as to why the money need is so necessary. Man cave/garage to the rescue!

My husband has his in the basement (which is finished to my liking) but he enjoys it because we never watch the same programs except the news.  He is really into cars and I am not so he gets to watch his shows in peace and quiet and I get to enjoy mine in the family room.

I used to watch King of Queens and was always jealous of Doug who'd regularly go to his garage with this guy friends to watch some sport and drink a beer. You'd frequently see a car or a motorbike in the backgound so the garage was definitely a dual purpose living area. I rarely saw Carrie go in there apart from to tell Doug off for something. Which brings about an understand of what the Man Cave is really for. It's a place for men to go where women aren't welcome. I wish my husband had one!!

It's the one place where a man is able to exert his own authority as to how he would like to decorate a room. Let's face it, a woman will have input in nearly 99% of the house as to how things should look, what furniture to buy, etc. That's why a man cave (or garage or even both) and grilling help men feel empowered.

Are you allowed to want a man cave if you're female?  :P  Each person having their own space to retreat to can be a nice thing, although I don't see why it necessarily has to be gendered. If my house has a man cave it'll probably end up being my favorite room which would sort of defeat the purpose, haha.

I don't have one but I do wish that I have one. Just so that I can spend some time hanging out with my sons and watch or play video games. Although we just do that in the Den but it is not a big room at this time. I do like the sound of that MAN CAVE!

I see no need for a man cave. If you want time alone go lay down in your bed alone and watch TV. I guess if you have the money and the time make a man cave if you wish but I really don't see the need for it.
