I was a smoker for 19 years and quit in Feb 09. Since then i feel great and can run around without getting out of breathe.

  this is for you for being able to quit!   ;D

i am not a smoker, but have socially smoked over the years, so i really don't know how hard it is to quit smoking. but i watched both of my parent's quit smoking in their 40s, after they'd been smoking for 20 years, and my husband quit smoking when we met, having been a smoker for 10 years, so, having seen how rough it is on a person, and their loved ones, when i hear that someone was able to quit after being a smoker for a long time, i like to give them a pat on the back, a thumbs up, or a round of applause. whatever i can to make them know that i am proud of them.

my 50 year old uncle passed away in june from lung cancer. he had smoked cigarettes for 35 years.

Smoking is a filthy, nasty habit that should be banned from all public use. What else can you do in public that knowingly harms those around you and stinks? For those of you that spent money on colognes and perfumes, here is a news flash! We don't notice the perfume, we notice the stinch of smoke. Little knpwn fact: most drug abusers are smokers leading one to believe that nicotine is truely the gateway drug.

I do not smoke, but my husband does.  Noone smokes in our house, everyone has to go outside to smoke, rain or shine.  all of our kids have asthma, so they cannot be around the smoking.  it is a nasty habit though. :dontknow:

Well I'll never defend smoking like the people here that are so cutthroat against it. One of my family members died at 50-something due to lung cancer. My neighbor also struggles with quitting. But I will say if you do smoke, I can accept it-- it does not bother me and I will never badmouth you for it. My childhood years were bombarded with "YOU SMOKE = YOU DIE AND KILL PEOPLE AROUND YOU! WE MUST SHUN SMOKERS! THEYRE EVIL!" propaganda. There are a few benefits among the dozens and dozens of awful aspects to it and it has quite an amazing spot in the history of the US. That and smokers have a very good perk of meeting new interesting people since they have to huddle in one area outside of public places.

But yeah, it's still really bad and nasty for your system. But a lot of things in life are. I'm just trying to make a non-aggressive approach here.

Drinking certain alcohol (especially if you're a MEAN drunk!), driving in a city with an older car, walking your dog and not picking up its crap, not flushing a public toilet, and working with certain chemicals! I can't think of anything else off the top of my head though lol

I've smoked probably 2 packs throughout my life and just don't have the 'addiction-aspect' for it. But I'm also one of those weirdos that loves the smell.

just stay away from us. you stay away from fire or dog poop right?

Why should we stay away? You're not outcasts shunned from society or anything...I'm not comparing you to fire or dog poop! Judge a human by his/her character and not by the color...err...cigarette they smoke.

And I love fire.

No problem there. Your the one missing out on meeting people. P.S. Why do you compare yourself to fire and dog poop?  Either  way, I'll keep my distance.

the worst thing about smoking - it was the main cause of my mother's death and the death of 12 very close friends.  smokers do not realize they smell like cow manure - which is a very acid manure - but not as acid as chicken - if you grew up near a farm then you know what i mean - the stink
