Cicadas in eastern Ohio
« on: June 13, 2016, 09:19:04 am »
Anyone out there being affected by the cicadas in Ohio and West Virginia right now (or anywhere else for that matter)?  I am in northern Ohio on the lake and we have nothing going on here, but just a few hours southeast it is crazy!  I was in Steubenville over the weekend doing some house and yard cleaning for my mom and those buggers were out in full force - at times the noise was deafening.  And they are not at all shy about dive bombing you as you walk by!  I took a few cell phone videos to capture the sound to share with my family who didn't make the trip with me.

I remember them as a kid, but I don't recall them being this loud!  Maybe I just don't have the memory I used to!  I commented to some friends on Facebook, that from a distance, they sound very much like the starship Enterprise firing its phaser banks!

You probably will be seeing a bee called the cicada killer soon. They love the hot weather and are a very intimidating <but pretty>looking bee. They build their homes in the ground and sandtraps on golf courses.

Read up on them on the internet and hopefully they help your cicada problem.

Never seen a cicada in my state... Seen dragonflies in my area since there is a stream of water nearby... Last time I saw a cicada is when I was NY when I was a kid.. Only saw one there and not more

I live in Ohio and where we live we have only seen maybe 5.  Have never heard any either.  North of us they are really bad and south of us they have a lot.  guess they just decided not to come out of the ground at my house  LOL

We experienced them on a trip to Illinois to visit relatives and they were LOUD for sure. It's an event that I was very glad to observe, simply because it was so unique and amazing I would never have been able to imagine it, if I had not been there and done that.

Lived in Ohio for a few years as a child and thought them very annoying as we  never had them in the desert here in N.M.. Of course they was a lot different things  that we never had. Like no beautiful mountains, Sunsets and sunrises that can't be beat and of course not near as much snow.
