Years ago, I could only buy asparagus in the can in my area. I really liked it with butter. I had sent for asparagus roots to grow my own but since my husband doesn't like it, he refused to plant it.
Now, with the produce store only a half mile away, they usually have fresh asparagus year around. Fresh is best! It's cheaper than the canned version, too. The last time I bought it, there was enough in the bunch that I blanched and froze enough for 5 more meals. Only problem is, it got too soft when cooked, but hey! I'll eat it anyway. Still better than canned.
I see that now some companies are starting to sell frozen asparagus. I might buy a bag and see how that works.
