men & shopping (a never-ending battle?)
« on: August 25, 2009, 09:47:34 pm »
i've been wondering about this, and i'd like to know if
conflict often ensues between most women &their significant
other, when it comes to shopping?

i grew up listening to my parents bicker about money,
and most commonly, my mother's shopping habits.
i realized this wasn't just my parent's relationship after
i had gotten my first job (in a physical therapy office) and
the women i worked with always had a tale to tell about
having to hide credit card statements &shopping bags
from their husbands. and although they laughed about it,
i knew they were serious. and honestly, these weren't
people who spent ridiculous amounts! these were
average love-to-shop gals, as was my mom.

and now that i'm older, and have lived with my fiance for
a few years, its begun  :o  we do not have joint
checking accounts or anything, and we split all the bills
right down the middle and i'm very responsible with that.
but to my surprise, its the same old story that i've been
hearing my entire life. he sighs when i bring home new
shoes or a picture frame or anything...

i always thought we'd be different!  :dontknow:
what about you? male perspective would be great too.

and "sounds like ya need to find you a new man
that don't care!" isn't quite what i'm looking for

Hmm...I am not entirely sure why this happens, but I think this starts after a while of sharing financial responsibilities. Maybe its cos, guys become more conscious of saving (maybe being the keyword here) and we on the other hand tend to relax more even though we share half of the responsibility.
My boyfren, as of now, believe it or not, shops more than me ;) He loves to buy new stuff all the time. He used to hate shopping before he met me but now I am the one who hates shopping :D He he. But the thing is we haven't started sharing any financial responsibilities yet as we are not staying together at the moment. And I have no idea how it's gonna turn out later.

Pray for the best and prepare for the worst  8) ;D ;)

Either Convince 'em or Confuse 'em 8)

My Hubby is worse than me about shopping.  We both love to shop but he will spend more money than I will.

I think that maybe men object to the things that are purchased because they do not feel it is something that is needed or it is not important to their life.  Many men like to shop, but, I think that they just get bored if they are dragged into one store after another that is of no interest to them.  It is hard to deal with money, as everyone has different takes on how money should be managed.  Up until retirement, my parents always seemed to handle money well and I never noticed any trouble at all. They both spent money carefully and wisely.  My Mom never had to hide anything.  My Mom was a smart shopper and never over did it.  She would buy things for herself/family within reason.  Perhaps that is why it was never questioned or turned into a problem.

Only my ex-husband was truly horrible to shop with. I've always enjoyed it shopping and he made it totally miserable. Most other boyfriends at least tolerated it. lol

hmm, interesting. once in a blue moon, my guy
likes to shop too! and its funny because he'll
end up spending twice as much as i ever do...
but then again, that's only every few months,
so i guess he likes to splurge.

even today, i'm thinking about going out and
finding a few halloween decorations, but i know
i'll have to shove 'em somewhere so he doesn't
know the difference when i pull them out in a
few weeks  :P

I love shopping but i know were on a budget so i don't really spend money at shopping with an unlimited amount of money oh yes i would shop and there would be a massive amount of bags. However my husband isn't a big shopper unless it is the expensive stuff.

I remember the 1st few years after I got married.  When ever I would ask my husband if he would go with me shopping, what he heard was "go out to the garage and pull out all of your fingernails".

I think if it's my money, it's my choice how to spend it (and vice versa with my boyfriend and his money), but when it comes to stuff like rent/mortgage, food, etc. couples should split the cost.  For the most part, I think a lot of men just can't understand why we could possibly need more than one pair of black heels!  ;)

My husband, now that he is retired, will come shopping with me if I am only going to get groceries. If I am shopping for anything else he always finds something else to do. We have been married for nearly 30 years so he isn't worried about me spending to much money. I do the budget anyway so I know more than he does how much money we have and how much we don't have.

I think the reason some men don't like to shop is because we know what we are going for most of the time. So we go in, get it, and leave. We don't feel like sitting around. Atleast in my case that is how it is.
