are handed down from one generation to the next.
when cleaning out the house when a family member passes away, you might find their recipe book or file.
recipes are one thing and skill in the kitchen is another thing.
some recipes will remain memories because of lack of skill in the next generation.
I find it amazing when I discover a few things [traditions, herbs and food recommendations] that have been handed down for thousands of years.

I have my Grandmothers old  betty Crocker cook book.  it is a pinch of this and a smidgen of that.  I have often gone back to it for an old recipe. Took me a while to get it down right  for the way we measure  now. But oh the memories of her cooking, she was so good could make something out of almost nothing and it would taste good.

My mother used to make the most wonderful sausage casserole which had little spicy sausages, mushrooms and a tomato based sauce. She let it simmer for hours and it was so flavorful. My grandmother on my father's side used to make a brisket dish which I have not been able to replicate to this day. It was the gravy that was so tasty and I would know the taste anywhere in the world until my dying day! I bought a brisket just the other week but my version tasted more like dog food! So I do not know what my grandmother did to flavor the gravy. I guess I'll never know.
