How can I get rid of a squirrel?
« on: March 09, 2016, 06:29:57 am »
I have a squirrel I think that seems to be making it's way inside my house somehow like between the walls or up in the ceiling. Any recommendations would be helpful. Please don't say exterminator as we are renting from a friend who is low on money and also I don't want the squirrel harmed.

Couldn't you just put up a humane trap, capture it & then relocate the animal.

I know here we have wildlife sanctuaries who will loan a trap, or come out & place it.
Here, you can call the animal shelter & they have the number for wildlife specialists.    I had to call for some baby opossums & a mother who lost their home in my neighbors backyard when they cut down all their trees & shrubs.   The tree guys actually caught the opossums & put them in a trash container, then later that day rehomed them in the national forest less than a mile away... so it worked out & the opossums had a much safer home away from civilization.

Borrow or buy a trap and put a Snickers bar in it, then put it in the attic. We have them all the time, but my wife likes the big silver tail ones running around the yard, just not in the house.

They love peanuts with the shell on. Lure them into a cage...set free. at the park.

Squirrel like lots of nuts, try luring it into a cage and set it free some place else.

The advantage a Snickers bar has, is it's easy to stick it on the trigger than a peanut.

I'm not exactly sure what to recommend, but there are people who you can hire to come and investigate how the squirrel is getting in and out of the house. For instance, my sister once had a problem with rats in her walls/ceiling so she hired an expert who told her that rats were able to dislocate their heads in order to fit inside the crack of a wall. He evaluated her house and told her to fix the crevices up in her house, which she did, and she no longer has rats for residents! She has now lived rat free for about 4 or 5 years.

I have used a safe trap to catch a squirrel that took residence in my non-usable attic space in California. I put sweets in it, trapped it and let it go up in the more wooded area away from my home. Good luck and keep us posted!

I hope you find a good answer to your problem.  Having a squirrel in the house would be terrifying to me.  I had one jump on me when I was a little girl. I don't remember the details - just how scared I was. I feel sure the live trap solution would work.  My husband has trapped and released many raccoons that way.  Best of luck with your endeavor!
