I guess it depends on where in the world you live on, but here in the US we dial that number for information.  Usually when we need a phone but only know some other information about the person or place.

As for the question asked, I used to dial 411 quite often when I had a land line.  Now that my cell phone is my primary phone, I never call it.  However, the reason is, it costs me about $4 to simply call 411 and then its something like 25cents a minute while I'm on the phone with them. Waaaay to expensive.  Especially if I were to have them connect me to the number I was looking up
