How old is to old to still believe in Santa?
« on: December 03, 2015, 01:09:00 pm »
My little girl is almost four I am going to let her believe in Santa as long as she wants, but I know people who have kid is just a few months older than my little girl who already told her that Santa doesn't exist because they want her to realize how hard they work to get her presents. I disagree I think kids should believe as long as possible. I am curious what other people think.

Personally, I think it is fine to play Santa but think kids need to know the truth about what Christmas is really about.  Just MY opinion.  As far as an age most kids by first or second grade know Santa is not real.  But my niece is 10 and there are kids in her class that supposedly still really believe a fat man flies thru the sky with reindeer and brings presents to kids all over the world.  Well except for I guess the bad kids in third world countries where they get nothing!

I think they figure it out themselves, eventually. We embrace Santa, but we focus more on other Christmas beliefs.

I think it's totally up to the parents, I told my grand daughter the truth she age 5 yrs old because what if I don't have the money to buy gifts do I tell her Santa Clause just forgot her.....So I tell her the truth and she understands if I don't have money to buy her gifts.

At some point at any middle school age for this country, kids will tend to stop believing in Santa for whatever reason.

Hard to say...might depend on if kids are hearing things from others at school, etc. and if older/younger siblings are involved...my brother was told a bit earlier than me because he was younger so it was harder to hide as long.

I think... I'd rather have my kid still believe in magic and stuff for as long as they can live. I mean Santa isn't just about gifts and getting presents. There's a lot more to Chris Kringle than what gets told. I think if we keep that alive and let kids dream until they're ready to stop believing, we'd be a bit better off. But I do believe that we shouldn't emphasis gifts on Christmas. Or make it sound like Santa only takes in behavior that happens during December. But I don't think ruining a magical moment for a kid and making it so they can't believe in things like the Tooth Fairy or Santa or the Easter Bunny can be kind of hard on a child's imagination. Gotta stop trying to make kids be adults and just let them be kids for as long as they can before puberty and High school takes the joy out of things.

Our nine year old still believes, but I wonder if she questions and and just plays along because she thinks that she should. Some kids want to go along with the scheme just to "humor their parents".

I'm 77 and I still believe in Santa. Not that he is a fat guy that flies through the sky with reindeer, but that he is a "spirit" of giving and happiness and anyone can have that even if they don't have a dime to buy presents.

Nice concept, oldbuddy. You're in no need of an attitude of gratitude because you already have it.

I told my children early on that Santa was kind of a notion that we kind of used on Christmas for extra fun and giving presents, etc., but that he wasn't really real.  :santa: Since I didn't want them to be too confused about who or who not to believe in, I told them that the real reason for the season was Jesus being born. I got a lot of flack from neighbors when my youngest told his friends that there was no Santa Claus.  :crybaby2:

Kids figure it out before their parents tell them anyway. They're not dumb, and it's pretty hard to pull the wool over their eyes. I don't recall being upset about the facts regarding Santa once I figured it out. You still get the loot! ;)
