People Amaze Me

Unfortunately at this point in life I am working in retail.  As any of you know, if you have been shopping lately, your credit cards and such have been replaced with a card with the "chip" in it.  If you swipe the card you will be prompted to insert the card.  There is NO way around this.

I had a man come thru last night and he swiped the card.  My screen popped up "have customer insert card".  I told him to insert the card in the slot and he swipes it again.  And again and again.  Getting more and more angry every time.  I told him "you cannot swipe it.  You have to insert the card in the slot".  I took the card and done it myself.  Then he immediately jerks it out of the slot and of course cancels the transaction.  I finally get him to leave it there for 3 seconds and he is day dreaming in wonder land. I tell him you have to respond to the prompts.  He starts to jerk the card out again and I AGAIN tell him to leave it there and answer the questions.  It is the same questions you were asked before...approve the transaction, sign the device, do you want cash back.  Not that big of a deal.

When we finally get thru he smarts off telling me he will not be back.  "I have shopped here 30 years and have never had to do this".  I tried to tell him HIS CREDIT CARD company done it.  Not us.  It is something new and when he received the card he also received a letter telling him about the new card.  And it is every where not just us.  He huffed and stomped off mumbling how he won't be back.  I am thinking "GOOD.  I only wish that was a true statement".

I see foolishness like this every day.  And this is why I say over and over PEOPLE ARE STUPID.

He is not the only one you are going to run into with that problem. It's almost xmas time and you'll be getting much much more. LOL

I've worked with the public for 35 years and it can be difficult.  That is a certainty.  I don't think think people are stupid, though.  I think they're preoccupied, inexperienced, or sometimes confused.  Maybe they're crabby and impatient, but not stupid.

Some people find it difficult to adapt to changes in their lives and that includes how CC are now accepting payment.  When dealing with the public can be a big headache and if they are not rational, it just makes things worse.

i am so glad i have retired from dealing with the  public.   I myself have not gotten used to this new chip thing and I always forget  to insert the card in the slot,,,,   but people will get testy when told to do this so everyone get used to it.  One day I will remember to insert card into slot  LOL

Oh my goodness! I don't understand why it is so difficult for people to adjust to those changes. I had to do it at Target for the first time recently and it was so easy. I was expecting it when going in though because I have been hearing about it in the news.

Was he elderly?  If he was I can understand how he was frustrated.

Well actually until yesterday I had never used the chip card myself.  I swiped the card out of habit.  The cashier said "you have to insert it".  I was like "oh yeah" okay not a biggie.  I insert it and follow the prompts.  Forgetting to insert it is not the issue.  It is when the buyer verbally attacks the cashier because they do not want to insert the stupid card.  Smh.  If you do not want to adapt to the new technology then carry cash.

The thing is from what I see this is actually less secure.  If someone steals a card it is much easier to use.  No PIN, No signing the device, Nothing.  Insert and go on.

I am elderly too, but I have no problem with the new chip cards.
