Every time I hear someone say someone is stupid, or their idea is stupid, I think of my dad.

One of his pet peeves was using the word stupid.

He'd say, "Were you born knowing what you know?  Nobody is stupid.  Ignorant, yes. Stupid, no."

Obviously you have not been in public lately.  Yes, people are stupid.  Maybe with a lot of them it is an act because it gets them out of working or having to do anything.  But if you "act" stupid then you deserve to be called stupid.

So how does calling them stupid make it better?
Do they actually learn anything by being called stupid?
Does it make them do their job better?

Or does it just cause resentment, so that next time they don't know how to do something, they won't ask for help?

I am guessing most of them do not have jobs.  When the same people come thru every day and act like they can't understand how to use the card terminal claiming "they are all different" and slapping the card all over the place - yes they are being stupid.

I am not talking about someone asking for help or someone who truly needs help with something.  I am talking about people being stupid.  It's like another thread about blocking the aisles.  Someone commented she said excuse me 3 times and the lady blocking everything just glared at her.  That is being stupid.  Move your stupid self to one side or the other and let people pass.  Or people who set at a green light and text and refuse to go on because they are not finished texting.  That is being stupid.  People are self centered and stupid.  From posts I have seen on here most of the people in these forums never leave their house so they do not know what it is like out there.  Things are not like they use to be.  People are rude, self centered, and stupid.  If you don't want to be called stupid then act like you have the sense God gave a green bean.

I actually heard a lady complaining at a nursery because her plants died.  She, with a straight face, looked at the guy working there and said "Oh do I have to water them"?  Say it however you want "Here's yer sign" or "You can't be that stupid".  I for one am sick of coddling people.    If you act like a total ignoramus then don't get upset when people call you stupid.

I think some people that are profoundly retarded are stupid meaning they lack common sense.Ronald Richardson from my old day program is stupid, retarded, and an imbecile.  His iq is 25 or below. My iq is 72.  I may be mildly retarded but I am not stupid.I went to college, I graduated from high school in all regular classes not special ed, and I live alone in my own apartment. :pumpkin: :pumpkin: :pumpkin: :pumpkin:

The world is full of too much hatred, there's no need for any of that.

Many people tend to interact with ignorance, in doing so they forget that they are referring to an individual’s behavior or action, that’s not necessarily who they really are. We all do foolish things at times, does that mean we’re all fools?

Exactly.  Everyone has done something at some time in their lives that was not the brightest thing to do.  I think we tend to forget our own screw-ups.

People who call other's stupid is just senseless bullying and nothing more. If a person makes a mistake I'm not going to call them a name and if its a misunderstanding I'm still not going to call them a name

Most people who call someone names online won't do the same in person.  And I am not sure we are all talking about the same thing here.  When I read the OP I assumed we were talking about calling people stupid in general.  People in general are stupid.  Not walking up to random people and saying "hey you are so stupid".  Also the old school meaning of the word stupid and how people use the word today are not the same thing.

As for bullying.  That word is way over used.  I think it is being a bully when customers act too stupid to know how to use a card terminal and then try to give the cashiers a hard time or complain about the cashiers or other employees in a store trying to get them in trouble.  Like I said earlier, most people like that do not even have jobs.  They run the roads all day and expect people to just bow down to them.

People expect their needs to be met above all other customers.  Get in line.  Wait your turn.  I have a friend that said he was waiting on a customer and there was a 2nd one waiting and a 3rd walked up and proceeded to try to butt in and get him to stop waiting on the customer he was with and wait on HER first.  The customer in front of him ripped the rude witch a new one.  She stood there stunned (obviously she had never been put in her place) and finally walked away.

There are businesses such as cell phone places where it takes a while with each customer and you wait your turn.  You are not more important than the people who got there before you.  Smh.

I don't call people stupid when they make mistakes because I think nobody is perfect except God and I make mistakes myself.

I hate hearing people say the word stupid.  It is one of the words we never let our son say.  Your dad is absolutely right, no one is born knowing everything and it's always better to bring people up than put them down.

Whenever some refers to someone else as stupid, it means they feel inferior to that person or action.  So they feel that calling another person stupid is a star for them.  Too bad it only makes others see them as a coward and pathetic.

The same question applies.

I do not believe in labeling people as such. However, if their action(s)/decision(s) warrants it, then I will. And as clickers pointed out, common sense is (unfortunately) not so common.
