i do not understand why people have to have anything more then basic cell phone service it was made for emergency now you have to have email texting and all the other stuff you do on a computer or laptop to me it is just a waste of money and i feel they need to go back to the way it use to be

It is good for when you want to know where your children are, etc., but I do think it makes us more tied to our gadgets then ever before.  People expect to get in touch with you wherever, whenever.  it also makes us less able to deal with people face-to-face, since most everything is done via texting.

I agree it does make us somewhat lazy considering memory of numbers etc. But it does have it's perks
as far a taking pictures, providing direction, acquiring information, performing transactions and the list goes on.

You can still get the old style cellphones, but I like the new smartphones. Having it with me when one of my grandkids starts showing off so I can shoot a quick video to let my friends and family watch later is priceless.

I love my iPhone and wouldn't want to go back to the older phones.  My husband was the last person I would have expected to get an iPhone but he had to have one for taking credit cards at work.  Now, he's pretty addicted to it for stock reports, weather, etc.  He doesn't play games on his like I do on mine but him just being able to use one is a miracle lol!

I love my IPhone. I often take pictures or videos with it. Just today I used it as a GPS to find an address. I would be lost without it.  What I do not do and hate to see is texting in a restaurant.

I don't think it's a waste. I have a smartphone and it's very convenient for me. Plus I like the features that the phone offers. Also, taking pictures is great and the camera is outstanding.

It may be a waste of money for you but for me a smartphone is very useful.   I travel a lot for work and it comes in handy when I have to check flight schedules and other travel related things.   It's not always practical to pull out a laptop and have to find an internet connection when you're on the go.  If I'm driving and get lost I use it as a gps.

My phone doesn't even cost a lot.  I only pay $37 a month including tax for unlimited everything.

I don't think it is a waste of time for me because it is a whole lot convenient for me since I have a smartphone.  It has made things easier for me.

I like your idea, but in the other hand, when you go out of the house and you in the emergency what use to contact beside your phone?..  I think you can use both as life go on :)

It is surprising to me how much I have come to rely on my smartphone even when I am home. It links to my home network through Wi-Fi, so there are no provider charges and goes with me no matter what I do around the house. If I come up with a brainstorm about what to write on my blog while I am busy with other chores, one tap on the screen pops open a note taker with voice to text so all I do is dictate a quick note to myself that I can edit later. Then I can't count the times I have set an alarm to remind me of something or make sure my nap doesn't last too long. I would find it hard to stay in control without it now that I am addicted.

It helps keeps me organized and I use it for my music player so I don't need my ipod with me at the gym along with my iphone.

That can be true at times, but if you don't have a computer, having a smartphone can be helpful at times. They're expensive and have become a distraction, but they're also fun to play games on.

Motorola is changing that, a new Moto G (3rd gen) is less than $200 instead of over $600 for the top brands and it does everything I need.

And computers were not made to begin with so everyone could have one.  If you don't like smart phones you do not have to have one.  Why would it bother you for anyone else to have one?  I do a lot on my phone.  I have an app that keeps up with my hours I work, grocery lists, even apps I make money with.  I am not hurting anyone and no one pays for my service but me.  I had never heard cells phones were suppose to be only for emergencies.
