remembering things
« on: October 22, 2015, 06:47:57 pm »
I find remembering things is becoming more of a challenge for me.  I now find myself having to write more lists and notes to myself and sometimes that can be a challenge because I forget what I do with the list.  What do you do to help yourself remember things?

I definitely have to remind myself to do things as well. What I find helpful is the new technology, like the reminder app on my iPhone. I also like to jot things down on paper as well, just in case my phone goes missing or the app doesn't do it's job properly!

My short-term memory shorts out quite often these days!  I attribute it to a cluttered mind, not old age setting in!
Have a wonderful day!

Same problem here. Can only imagine how much worse it will get as I get older. I'm only 37!

My father who passed away in February had Alzheimers.  He still recognized most people except at the very end (it wasn't the Alzheimers that killed him).  Still it did have a profound effect on his memory.  He wrote a lot of things down in memo pads.  I have a few dozen of them to read through and get a profound look into how his mind was working (and not working) over the final years of his life.  He was always a story teller his entire life, but in the last year or two, he only told a handful of the same stories over and over again out of the dozens to hundreds that he had locked up in his memory. But I don't think he ever had an understanding (or could not remember) that he has Alzheimers.  He always used to say to just about anybody who ever asked him any questions -- including close family members -- "I have this short term memory problem."

More to point to the question at hand and some of the replies, I rely TOO MUCH on my iPhone notes and calendar and occasionally written sticky notes.  It is scary sometimes to need those reminders to not forget to run this errand, or pick up this child at this place and time, or to not miss that deadline at work...  But it gives a whole new appreciation for people who need to a reminder to eat or to take medicine or some other life-necessary functions.

My short term memory is gone and can't remember where I put it.

I've always been a list maker.  I also connect things very well.  I feel that these techniques are tools to aid my memory.  My biggest problem is names, always has been, it's a self esteem thing.  The way I see it I've got more files in my brain than I did earlier in life so it's harder to find the right one as fast as when there was fewer memories.  :glasses-nerdy:

I have always made lists of things to do. Most of my life there has always been more things to do then time to do them. I have also always made a grocery list because I hate to find I have not bought something I need and have to go to out expensive grocery store to buy it.

I try to not be dependent on technology to remind me of things... But when I don't have enough sleep, I write a note to myself to make sure I don't forget (like packing homework, report/lab in my backpack)

A list of things-to-do-today is a must. Everything you write down, you can never forget.
