Why not call the vet and ask why?I would thnk if you had the dog there they would tell you something was wrong.

I am not sure of the laws in all the states RE vaccinations etc.Again call vet and ask why.If its the law its something you should know how to handle i would think by having a pet.

Yes it would be.  Sometime the neighbor that you live in called animal control and they come and tell you for the save of other, if you not done so.

Why would you not vaccinate your dog?  Most places it is the law that you vaccinate your animals.
If the dog bites someone and has not has it's shots then the dog will be killed and tested for rabies.

I don't know the law where you live but in some states if you have an animal and you do not vaccinate then the vet has to report it.  You either vaccinate the animal or you provide proof where you done so some where else.

But no one on here can tell you WHY your vet done something.  If you want to know why HE done something then you need to call him and ask him.

I am confused, I know you have to give the vaccines to your dog, but the most important and the one that everybody gets concerned with is the Rabies.  I have a 10 year old shitzu and I cannot afford to take her to the vets every year, they sent me notes regarding what my dog needs and I take her in when I can afford it.  They only shot I really get concerned with is the Rabies, when that expires I run to the vets, since they have to report it to the state, county whatever for us to get the dog license, every year for $10. And like I said the only shot the get concerned with is the Rabies.

Maybe someones else called animal control?  If this is an older dog like mine and your rabies shot has expired then I understand otherwise call the vet and fine out what's going on.

Never heard of such a thing.  Check into it and question why would the vet just call on your dog.

I would think that the vet cared about the pet - it might have something bad.

Never heard of such a thing.  Check into it and question why would the vet just call on your dog.

You don't know that they just called on her dog.  They may be required to report it to some authority if according to their records a rabies shot has expired.  Rabies shots are not that expensive.  And it's once a year.  If you can't afford $30 once a year then you probably don't need the dog.

I would also question why the OP thinks the vet called animal control.  Maybe someone else did.
Maybe someone else in the area who knows the dog has not had the shots called because they don't want to worry about being bit.  Rabies treatments for humans are very painful and very expensive.  And the chances of ever getting the money out of the dog's owners are slimmer than none.

I use to have a neighbor and she called and complained to every authority about everything in the world whether she had her facts straight or not.

After calling the vet office I would also find out what the laws are for my state, county, whatever before I ranted on a public forum on the internet.  What happens after you make a few phone calls and find out it's a law that the vet has to report the shots are delinquent.  So he is in his right.  Or that is wasn't the vet at all but an anonymous person.

Obviously the shots are past due.  So why not just go get the shot and everyone is safe.  Including the dog.  If he gets rabies he is going to die a not so nice death.

Don't know where you live, but by law, dogs need to have a Rabies vaccination.  At least it's the law in the County that I live in, which is Maricopa (AZ).  Here, you won't get a "license" for your dog until you can prove he/she's had a Rabies vaccination with a completed Rabies Vaccination Certificate that you would get from your Vet or wherever you went to get the dog vaccinated.

Here's a website that can help you out.  Scroll to your STATE to see what the vaccination laws are in your particular State:

You might have changed vets.  I would ask the vet why he did it and I would check into the laws, perhaps the vets are required to report it.   But I know there have been times we took our pet to a different vet due to the hours of our regular vet and not being able to make it in without taking time off from work.   When we originally began with him he was open on Saturday mornings which worked out well for us.  Now he's only open typical office hours 8:30 - 5:00 so we changed vets.

I'm curious about this, going to check the laws in my state.

I would definitely question the vet about this issue.  We've accidently let our animals' rabies shots run out before but our vet has never called Animal Control about it.  He just sends us a reminder and we get the shots.  Sounds a little off to me that a vet would call Animal Control.  Pets sure need their shots kept up to date but its easy to let them slip up.

I worked at an animal hospital for a few years and I never heard of a veterinarian (or anyone at the office) just randomly reporting to animal control.

Did you visit the vet for any reason? Did your dog get out? Was it involved in any incidents with other animals or people? There has to be a reason that animal control was notified.
