Picky eaters
« on: July 18, 2015, 10:05:30 pm »
It seems to me that picky eaters are spoiled children with poor eating habits ... My kids are not allowed to be picky... They were raised to appreciate a home cooked meal and raised to not waste food... I'm a great cook and they enjoy healthy meals... Once you give a child too many choices they choose junk food... And if you don't teach them how to eat right at an early age, they grow up with bad habits as an adult

I'm an adult picky eater that was a picky eater as a kid.  I wasn't spoiled at all.  My mom made dinner and if we didn't like it, we could skip dinner......and many times, I did.  I have a long list of foods I HATE: any type of seafood including tuna, liver, gravy, soups, not too fond of meat, etc.  Anything with very much onions or garlic in it literally makes me sick, something which seemed to make my mom mad since she uses those alot.

I don't "waste" food since I learned not to bring home things I really don't like, just because they are supposed to be healthy for you.  (Because it WILL go BAD before it is eaten.)

I'm not that into "junk food" because growing up, that wasn't an option.  There's no nutritional value in real junk food.

I do a daily protein shake (because I don't like much soy products either) to get protein,  I love salads, avocados, Ezekiel bread, wraps & burritos, homemade pizza loaded with veggies,  and I take a daily vitamin.  I don't think that amounts to "poor eating habits"....

Every kid is different.  I don't think any kid should ever be forced to "clean their plate" or to eat things they can not stomach.  The option to skip a meal without "fuss" worked for me and I'm still appreciate that I was allowed to have that option.

Growing up I was too raised to eat what was served or to go without. And hence as an adult, I have a very large pallet of foods that I enjoy. I have a friend, on the other hand, whose kids' father was very picky eater; pretty much a strict "meat and potatoes" kind of guy that doesn't like most veggies nor any herbs and spices beyond slat and pepper. Because of his pickiness, when they raised their kids, they'd serve mainly the foods that he ate. And as a result, the kids now are also very picky. They dislike most any veggie including tomatoes (although they will eat spaghetti sauce and pizzas, go figure).

So in some ways I do agree that picky adult eaters tend to start as kids that weren't "forced" to try different foods (and by "force", I also include the ultimatum that you either eat what's served or you don't eat at all). But I also understand that this is partially a cause for our obesity as well... The idea that kids have to "clean their plate" is also not a good habit for kids to learn. Sometimes when kids won't eat something, it isn't strictly because they are being picky; they could also just be too full to eat more food. They may have filled up on the stuff they know they like leaving the stuff they aren't too sure of, and then being too full to actually try it. So I think it's difficult to not overfeed kids while at the same time providing them a large variety of foods to appreciate.

I am not a picky eater, we were raised to 'try' new foods.  If we didn't like it we didn't have to eat it, but had to try it.  Of course my mom didn't make foods we didn't like.

I'm a very pick eater. As a kid, I had to eat everything that was put in front of me, but now I'm so picky I don't like a lot of stuff. Part of the problem is that I have digestive issues, and a lot of stuff bothers me.

what makes you think picky eaters are spoiled?

I am a very picky eater... I was not raised spoiled and still am not spoiled at all... I don't get everything i want...and still to this day i still get the same responce as i did when i was a kid.. at least try it... You never know you might like it...
Yup... I don't get catered to with what i want even as an "adult" so i don't see why people often think of picky eaters as a spoiled person....

I just don't what i don't eat... If i like it fine if i don't fine. I am not going to shove food that i don't like in my mouth i have gotten sick like that several times.. and don't wish to go through it again.. (:

I tend to agree but there are some things that you just can't eat no matter what.
