Need a "technie" for computer question

Suddenly, last week, my computer started acting up. I usually use Chrome but it's been freezing up on me. The little arrow that goes round and round when a page is loading just keeps loading and i can't do anything. I have to get out of whatever I was trying to load by "end task." I've tried everything except uninstall and reinstalling Chrome (because I do love it) because I'm afriad I'll lose my setup info.

I even ran a deep scan over the weekend to see if I picked up a nasty malware. Nothing.

Posting on the Chrome forum gives the same info (which I have tried everyting) over and over again with no other solution. I did have this problem a year ot 2 ago but that time it was caused by malware.

This morning, Chrome, it froze again, so I started using FireFox,  I was on a site trying to make a reply to a post that replied to my first post and my keyboard froze up...at least I think it did, unless it was the site itself. It took almost a half hour to post 3 sentences. Wierd.

Any suggestions?

The "keyboard" froze?  Or the program froze?  Big difference.  I had an issue with my keyboard a few years ago and all I had to do was change the keyboard.  The computer would randomly stop recognizing it was there.  At the time it wasn't as easy to just go get a new keyboard and plug it in.  This was before the plug n play era.  I was using IE and had a multitude of problems and finally switched to foxfire and I really like it.  Don't have the issues I was having before.

Websites freeze up even with FireFox, not as much, but it did yesterday.  Chrome always freezes up on all sites, including FC especially when I'm doing PTC.

You say you did a scan, but do you regularly run Disk Cleanup or CCleaner? This can often be the reason a computer runs slow or freezes.

Yep. It's a weekly thing with me. I also run a daily scan for disk errors, security problems, malware, spyware & viruses, registry errors, etc. and do a "deep" scan once a week to defrag, make sure all my programs are updated. I spend a couple hours doing the weekly things along with the daily during the weekend.  My malware/virus software is on auto update and has never failed me before for catching the nasties. I'm afraid my computer truly is dying.

I have 3 computers. One needs a power supply; this one just had a power supply installed because both these computer's power supplies died the same time, and the third one can't be used because son expanded the screen to watch movies on his flat screen TV and we couldn't change it to be compatible with my old flat screen monitor.

I had an Adobe Flash update last week, and I know that after they role out an update, there tends to be a lag time before the sites are up to speed. So I tend to get more crashes from websites, and the browser will freeze while it tries to work out the error before posting an error message. Possibly something like a browser add-on got updated an is now causing your browser to freeze up on you?

Yeah they can freeze up with anything.  But with IE I was ready to throw the computer out the window.  I have had less issues with Foxfire than any other I have used.

I don't have CCleaner but I have a Junk Files Cleaner, Disk Cleaner and a Registry Cleaner, all in the same program I use for Malware, spyware, viruses, etc. Optimizer, Defrag, etc. I've never had this kind of problem.

To be on the safe side, I downloaded Malwarebytes and ran that. it didn't find anything either.

Assuming you don't have a virus (from running your security programs) and you cleaned/optimized your computer (using Ccleaner and Disk defragger).. The only two problems that I can think of that can cause Browser related issue are not enough RAM or version of browser/flash player.

Modern browsers like Chrome and Firefox consumes a lot of RAM space and depending on how many tabs are opened it can cause lag and unresponsive browser. Home users should at least have a minimum of 4gb of RAM, while 8gb is the most optimal.. Check how much your internet browser is using from the task manager and see the RAM usage... It shouldn't be peaking at high numbers when you have chrome opened. If you are peaking at 80%-100% when using Chrome, buy a 2gb ram stick and install it in the expansion ports (make sure it is compatible at crucial.com)

Another problems that can cause unresponsive browser is the version and flashplayer.. Sometimes when internet browsers update to new version, bugs or memory leaks are common.. And since Chrome auto updates you could possibly have a unstable/buggy version. This could also affect the flash player since when chrome updates, it usually needs a updated/compatible version of flash to load stuff. However it is highly unlikely since chrome auto updates flash (but to note I had a flash related issue in Firefox in 2010 due to that, and since then I switch to Chrome).. I would suggest using a stable version of Chrome (previous stable builds)

not sure if this was posted but I use combo fix from mybleepingcomputer.com I also use malwarebites. if that fails you can always try a system restore or just re lode your computer completely and start over.

You didn't mention what Operating System you're using, however, the instructions below work for Windows 7/8.  From what I'm reading, this has been a Chrome problem for a long time.  I can't really say because I'm not a Chrome user.  Maybe you'll want to try what's suggested in the below article to see if it helps you out any:

You might also want to take a look in your "Task Manager" and scroll the list to see if there are any programs that are running in the background that are unfamiliar to you.  Some malware are very good at "hiding" themselves from detection.  If you see anything like a bunch of numbers or weird letters, or even a big blank space, that could be something.  If you're not sure what a file running in Task Manager is, you can always look it up on google (or your choice of search engine) to find out.

if you're signed into google chrome, meaning the browser is associated with a gmail account, then i'm pretty sure all your settings and bookmarks will be saved.

I reinstalled google chrome a few days ago, and it kept all my settings.
If you're still unsure about it, maybe do a bit of research on it?
