Looking for a House to Buy
« on: May 27, 2015, 09:48:51 am »
I've been house-hunting in Virginia for a while now. Its really difficult to find anything decent for a good price. Its amazing how over priced houses are down there. I'd like to find a small house in a few acres out in the country, in the Shenandoah Valley preferably. I know there are a lot of little houses down there, but I can't seem to find any for sale. The ones that are for sale are way overpriced, even when they need work. I really should have got a house a couple years ago, when prices were cheap.

Colorado is crazy as well if you are buying anything up to six hundred thousand dollars. Our neighbor had his house on the market for two days and forty eight people looked at it. The second family that looked at it bid Five thousand dollars over the asking price and the house was over priced by ten thousand dollars. The neighbors across the street overpaid for their home one year ago by forty thousand dollars and are on the market for an even higher price.  I know some buyers that have written over thirty contracts and couldn't get an acceptance even by over bidding.  Houses are lasting on the market an average for two to three days unless something is seriously wrong with the house. We are staying in ours for another two years-regardless.

Here is the thing.  Land is one thing there will never be any more of.  What we have is all we have.  As we get more and more people and more and more over populated there is not enough land for everyone to have their own space.  And what is available is going to come at a price.

Tresbn00- Not sure where you live that houses sell within 2 or 3 days of being listed.  I know someone who has been trying to sell their house for over 10 years.  Of course it is way over priced.  I am assuming they have a 2nd or 3rd mortgage and are trying to get enough to pay all of those off.  No one even looks at it any more.  Anyway, I can agree with 2 or 3 months but not most selling within 2 or 3 days.

It all depends on the area..
like they literally can't give houses away in Detroit.

I live in southern California where a 1200 square foot home in a decent area sells for around $500,000.     Taxes are about $1000 a month.

Wow, I thought Virginia was expensive, but it sure can't beat Colorado or California! Land is at a premium these days. But overpopulation wouldn't be a problem if illegal immigration wasn't allowed, and legal immigration was curbed so that only a few people could come in every year.

Wow, am I glad I live in a small town in N.M.. Yeah maybe not too many good jobs but man the prices some of the house cost where you live is awful. We have plenty here for sale but we have to travel for good doctors and shopping since our store is very overpriced. I go out of town a lot for the doctors so I stock up when I am in a big city. Saves money. But we like it here. Besides I had to move back to help take care of my dad..

It seems it's a trade-off.  You find a house for a decent price or one that is close to all the conveniences.  We live in the country in Virginia (and love it), but we have to drive a good distance to shopping, doctors, etc.  I do a lot of shopping online.

We were in the same situation. Here in Florida if you want land you are out in the boonies. My husband would have to drive over and hour to get to work. Not very ideal. A few properties we looked at were on non maintained dirt roads. We were lucky to find a home on an acre that has very little around it.

I hope you will find a house you are looking for. I know it is not that easy to find a good house when you are looking for a specific features in the house. We are looking for a house as well, but planning to build one.

I am in the process of selling my house and am looking for a condo. So I can see it from both sides...  looking good for me as a seller, however the market for what I'm looking to buy isn't great. So....

I don't mind having to drive. It's worth the privilege of living in beautiful rural Virginia. I'm more concerned about having high speed internet. Do you have high speed internet? Is it usually available in rural Virginia, or is it like upstate NY where the only choice is HughesNet satellite internet?

You wanna see over priced houses? Come up to Jersey! I can buy 2 houses for the price of one if I go to Virginia! LOL!! I've seen the houses in Virginia and they are gorgeous compared to NJ homes! Good luck house hunting! :)

It seems like there should still be a lot of foreclosures out there for a decent price - I hope you find exactly what you want for a great price - I hate house hunting.  Well again best of luck.
