I just lost my mother, the only parent I ever had and ever knew. I am beyond devastated. I can't think straight. I can't sleep. I can't eat. I'm trying so hard not to panic, to try to keep my anxiety and depression from taking over so intensely. I'm terrified of losing what little we have, including our home and her car, and I just don't know what to do or where to turn. If anyone knows of any non-profits or individuals/groups that might be able to help me and my siblings with legalities and finances, please let me know.

First off, I am sorry for your loss.

I don't know of any organizations that help with finances.  In the area I live in more and more people are not even having a funeral.  It is a waste of money.  It is unreal that you pay $10,000 plus and that is for a cheap funeral.  Did she have a will?  You really need to talk to a lawyer.  Don't get random advice from people on the internet.  Everyone will tell you something different and no one knows your family's situation.

I am so sorry, my condolences. I know its very hard..I lost my grandfather when I was in high school and ended up not being able to wear any of my Christmas clothes because I lost so much weight. Try to eat something even if you don't want to..

So, sorry for your loss! I understand your instant devastation since, it's the same feelings i'd had when my husband died in front of me! The only comfort I could give u is the pain goes away or becomes less & less each passing day!

First my condolances.  Second I really suggest findin a local attorney - even if you can't afford for them to do a lot or continue to see them one visit might be affordable at least to get some basic advice on what you should do.  That is what I did when my mom passed the one visit cost me $100 but it was well worth it.  Other than that I don't know but having lost my mom and my husband over the last five years I know how you must be feeling.  Take care.

I am so very sorry for your loss.  I am a little confused why you think you will lose everything.  If uour mom had a will that would decide who gets what.  If she didn't I was under the impression (i may be wrong but I don't think so), assets go to next of kin.  If your dad is alive and they are still married he would get it, if not it probably will be divided among the children.  I am not sure what happens if your mother had more outstanding bills and debts than her assets.  Good luck!

It is actually not that simple.  If there is no will then what she owns will go into an estate.  For example if there is a car and no spouse then the car will go into an estate.  It's not like it use to be.  I am not sure why it changed.  Maybe so if you owe any money like to a credit card or something they have more recourse to collect the money???  It's not right.  Children should not have to fight to get their parents house.  And that is fight the state.  Anymore most are fighting each other : (

First off, I am so sorry for your loss.  You don't say how old you are or how many siblings you have.  It has been a few days since your post, so I am hoping that someone in your community has been able to help you through all the things necessary after someone dies.

A local church, the funeral home director, social services.....

Sorry to hear about your Moms' passing.  Perhaps through your place of worship there may be a program to help out.  I wish you good luck and will say a prayer for you and your family.

I am so sorry.  I would try getting a pro bono attorney.  Grief counseling may also help.  You are in my prayers.

Oh dear, what a terrible shame. I do feel for you and I know how you feel. I lost my father 8 years ago and it is difficult to make sense of everything in the beginning. The shock of it all really shakes your confidence and suddenly you feel like your protective layer has been stripped away. But after a while, when you're ready, you will put your protective layer back on for your siblings.
