Addiction to electronic gadgets
« on: May 06, 2015, 06:45:26 am »
I know there are hundreds of electronic gadgets out there. They were invented to make our lives better. However, some people get carried away with some of these devices. for instance, the cell phones or i pods. Some people can't live without them. Their lives depend on them. Some people would feel sick for not having their i pods or cell phones with them. Could this be a sign of addiction? What do you think?

No I don't see this as addiction.  I almost always have my cell phone with me if I am away from home.  I am not addicted to my phone but I do keep it with me.  When I went grocery shopping yesterday I used 2 different apps to track my spending and to cross things off my list.  Random idiots being nosy in the store may look at me using my phone the entire time I am in the store and say "oh she is addicted to that phone".  But IF I had a calculator and a pen and paper list would they say "she is addicted to that calculator and pen and paper" ??  Phones basically have allowed us to have a mini computer in our pockets.

I have also seen people with the ear buds in their ears supposedly listening to music ALL the time.  I think this looks a little foolish when you are shopping in a store but I would not say they are addicted to music.

I have also heard people who see others in waiting rooms, in line somewhere, or even break rooms at work who are on their phones and say they are addicted to their phones.  NO, maybe they are like me and just avoid unnecessary conversation by pretending to be engrossed in their phones.

I think "addiction" is an overstatement.  To me, it's just more of a sign of the times.  We're surrounded by new technology that help people do many things, all rolled up in one small package.  It's convenient because you can carry these things with you wherever you go.  Be honest, when was the last time you saw an actual "phone booth" anywhere?  If you ever had an emergency or needed to make a call, without a cell phone or a tablet or any of these small miracles, you wouldn't be able to.

I appreciate all of the technology today and how fast it's improving, yet I still don't have a cell phone, LOL.  I'd be one of those people who would be looking for a phone booth and never find one!

I don't really think of it as an addiction. My gadgets bring me entertainment, be able to make money from home, and be more organized.

I think it could be classified as an addiction.  I think I might be addicted to my laptop and the internet.  If I didn't have a functional laptop and access to the internet I'd have a difficult time thinking about something else.  I'd need to go to the public library to do what I usually do.

Have a great day!

I understand the pervasive addiction that some people have for electronics. In my previous job, I knew of this girl (who was in her early twenties) who could not pull herself away from her cell phone for even five minutes! I am usually glued to my cell phone too, but only because of sheer boredom or if I am talking with my boyfriend.

Saw a phone booth?  Uh Yesterday. lol.  I am guessing it still works or surely they would have taken it down.  Actually I know it does because there was a bomb threat called in on it a few months ago.  I think that is about the ONLY thing it is used for.  Smh.

I agree with misusing the word "addiction".  There are a lot of words over used these days.  Another is the word "bully".  If you disagree with anyone about anything too many times the other person gets mad and calls you a bully.

So maybe SHE was bored as well.  Or talking to HER boyfriend.  I used my phone all the time.  I even have a couple of apps that I use to help me at work.  And as I previously stated when I go shopping.  It's no different than having a piece of paper and a pen and crossing things off a list.  I just have it on my phone, thus having one thing to carry, and check it off the list that's on the phone.  It's like Blacksheep said, it's a tool.  The world we live in you are not going to survive if you do not adapt to using technology.

Don't have a smartphone but if i did would be addicted i know. Think of people who can't live without their phones or pc's or tablets whatever they have. Few weeks ago the net went down at first i was ok but after a couple days was pulling my hair out almost so yes i'm addicted.

Our society, sadly, has turned into a Gimmick and Gadget society - we can't seem to live without all these fancy things.  But, I tell you what, I remember long before cell phones, Ipads and the like and we got along just fine!!!!!!!!

It's sad how so many people depend so much on smartphones or ipods and computers. I admit that I fall into these people. But I wouldn't say I can't live without them because I can. I've gone thru a week without my laptop or computer and a week without my phone because it was broken. LOL!

I wouldn't call it an addiction, but dome people do seem overly dependent on technology.
