I am reading a fiction novel and am learning a lot about horses. In the book, one of the characters is a blacksmith and a "horse whisperer". He tames horses whop have behavior problems.  I have always loved horses.

I have always loved horses.  I was lucky to get my dad talked into a pony when I was young.  Then I got a horse.  I rode Rocky every day.  Loved that horse!

After marriage and kids and the fact that we lived in town, I thought I was never to have another horse.....but a friend was selling one cheap and another friend was willing to board it cheap.
So, we have had several horses since that time,
Our two youngest girls showed the horses in 4H and were very successful.  Both earned state fair trips with their horses.

Now, the kids are grown, we do not have horses.

I like horses, but I'm afraid to ride them! They are nice to look at though, and I love watching the guys riding them in the old Westerns. (Although, depending on who is riding the horse, I don't always actually notice the horse because I'm enjoying the view of the rider! :) )

My son, his wife and daughter show horses.  In 2013 they won the Appaloosa World Show.  They also train quarter horses and appaloosas.

Thanks but I had my share of them growing up, if they were not being used for work they were hay burners. Meaning they ate and not produce. Been thrown more times then once . But I will say I miss riding sometimes. But now with the cost of hay and feed if you are stabling one and only ride once in a while not worth it.

I rode horses a little bit when I was growing up.  A friend had horses and let me ride some.  I enjoyed it until one day an big appaloosa ran away with me!  Scared me to death!  My friend caught up with us and stopped the horse, thankfully.  My father-in-law loved horses;  he had a tennessee walker horse and rode him till he was 91.  At different times he had as many as 3 horses  I never rode any of his horses but he used to enter competitions and win with his walkers.

I was one of those little girls that loved horses and I never outgrew it.  I rode them at summer camp, but not since.  I do love to draw and photograph them though.

I watched a documentary about Monty Roberts, the horse whisperer Robert Redford's Horse Whisperer's character is based on.  It stuck with me and I tried it on some horses in the pasture next to a friend's house.  She said they were very shy and wouldn't let themselves be petted.  I shook my keys to get their attention and one came over, but wouldn't let me touch him.  Okay, so I turned my back to him and walked along the fence, he followed.  I walked back and forth along the fence and he started nudging me in the back.  I rubbed his nose with my shoulder and kept it up.  Eventually I was able to turn around and pet him with my hand.  He was clearly surprised we had gotten to that point, but seemed to like it.  I was awestruck, but not totally surprised.

I love horses, they're such amazing creatures.  We can learn a lot from these gentle creatures.  They are even finding service work helping troubled kids.
