Volunteer Fire Department
« on: January 18, 2015, 08:48:22 am »
Where we live the town is small and we have a volunteer fire department.Great group of people.Who work at there regular jobs and are there to go out on calls. They use an air raid system that goes off 7 times in a row to let them know help is needed. We live right across from the fire department and it is really loud. Does anyone else have that?

Yes, we actually live in a township, next to a large city.  We have a volunteer fire department also.  We can always hear when the signals go off telling the firemen to report to the station.  They are a great bunch of people who risk their lives for no pay.

Yes, I live in an area with a volunteer fire department. A few years back my neighbor was burning leaves and the fire went out of control. The fire came all the way up my backyard and was a few feet away from my propane tank. The fire department came and put it out before anything bad happened. I donate to them whenever I can.

Our fire department is not volunteer where we currently live. We pay about $300 a year in fire dues. i have lived in places where there was a volunteer fire department though. I always thought that was really cool.

Yes, I have lived in places with a volunteer fire department, however, THEY decided that THEY wanted us to pay for them...

I did live rural and had a Volunteer Fire Dept. They did come to my house for a grass fire and also to take my husband to the hospital when he stopped breathing. They put a tube down his throat to breath for him until he reached the hospital. Saved his life. I am forever grateful for that. However after 2 months he died from cancer. These people do a great job and I am certainly am proud of them. BMaston12

I think volunteer fire fighters need more recognition.  They give selfless time to help others.

I think firefighters in general are great heroes, but volunteer firefighters are very admirable for putting them in such circumstances like this on their own accord when their community needs them. I don't have the willpower to do this myself, but I like hearing them in action.

When I was a kid and we live in PA, we lived close to the fire dept.  I always thought it was so exciting.

Used to live in a little town, just a couple houses down from the fire department. Then we moved into a bigger town, so now we are... right across the street from the fire department. :P
It's usually not very loud though, there isn't a siren except for during storm warnings (minus their truck sirens, of course).

My older sister's first boyfriend was a volunteer fireman in that little town too.

where I live we do not have volunteer firefighters, Ithink years ago we dd. . When I was 9  I had some medical issues and the fire department was great. I think volunteer firefighters and EMts should be highly commended it takes a very special person to do that job. :peace: :snowflake:

I know my dad was a volunteer firefighter when I was a child. I don't remember him ever having to do anything. You know, like fight a fire or anything like that.

However,  I do recall one dinner we went to for the families of the firefighters. That was cool!

No.  Most VFD have 2 way radios.  A tone is set off that only they hear on their radio.  Seems kind of odd to have a loud air raid siren to go off.  Besides that who is to say they will hear the siren and how do they know where to go?  With a 2 way radio like the police have most could meet at the scene.
