For some people, grief begins before a loved one passes away, if that loved one has a fatal disease.  For other people, they have to go through all the stages of grief, beginning with the first one.  Still others grieve in private.  As has been said, the grieving process is not set in stone.  All people grieve differently.

Everyone grieves in their own way and some not at all.  It is strictly an individual thing.  I do think that someday down the road it will hit this person and then the healing with start.  I wish them luck.

I usually start immediately. but it doesn't end because when their birthday and the day they pass arrive you go through it over and over again. My husband and many of our friends are the same way.

Appearing "cold" may just be the way your friend is grieving.  Everyone is different.  I would say the process begins as soon as you realize that person is no longer available to you.

Grief is an individual's emotional response to tragedy and varies between people. Some people are very emotionally controlled and may appear cold or as though they are not grieving, but that doesn't mean they are not. Others may appear "over the top" in their grief. Everyone is different. There is really no right or wrong way to grieve, but it can turn into clinical depression.

I start grieving before I even lose them because I know it is inevitable.
Have a wonderful day!
