My husband works for Wal-Mart and i can tell you this. Most of his coworkers and management does not care about customers. I dont blame Wal-Mart im pretty sure these people would act the same regardless of where they work.

Not true.  You obviously have never had to work for min wage and only get 15 to 18 hours a week and be expected to live on that.  Then no matter what you do management is fussing and yelling at you to get more done.  People call in and then you are expected to do your job and theirs.  I remember when I worked at Walmart I came into a mess.  The department was already behind and it was close to Christmas and people were buying crap faster that we could put it out.  I was in grocery.  I was trying to scan stuff in to put it up and the battery went dead.  I was walking to get a battery and the manager who told me to put the stuff up out of the floor saw me and actually YELLED at me asking me what I was doing walking around.  I tried to tell him but another manager higher up asked him what was wrong and he still yelling tells him basically how worthless I am.  I did not say anything, figured why bother.  Went back to where I was working and proceeded with my new battery to do what he told me to do.  I was fighting back tears, mostly because I was working in the freezer and didn't want them to freeze to my face, and did not want him to have the satisfaction of knowing he could get to me that bad.  Anyway, a few minutes later he came in there and talked to me and said 'you do do a good job.  I get excited and yell but I will tell you you do a good job'.  He did not apologize or tell the other manager I was in the right.  Idk.  Until you have had to put up with the crap of retail, from the job and from demanding customers, you just don't understand.  I have actually seen several retail employees crying on the job because a manager has totally ripped them out on the floor or because a customer has jumped all over them.   People who do not have to deal with the public do not know how good they have it.

Obviously you know me so well...worked for minimum wage more times than i can count. I've been called stupid by customers more times that i care to remember.  Was threatened to be fired by a manager  because i was working multiple jobs and was told i wasn't moving fast enough from one side of the store to the other. I've wiped crap off of senior citizens behinds for $7\hr and was treated badly by CNAs when they were unwilling to do their job and i promise you they were making alot more than me. I dont blame anyone for their actions but that person. I didn't appreciate being blamed or treated badly over things i had no control over so i cannot with a clear conscience blame an entire retail chain for the rudeness or incompetence of one person. None of the rudeness i encountered affected how i treated anyone during the remainder of any of my shifts. It didn't matter that i wanted to hit them, run them over in the parking lot or what have you.

lol.  What you wanted to hit them with.  That gave me a chuckle.

In how they train the employees? lol.  That does not make sense.  Employees are given guidelines and rules as to how to handle situations.  For example - returns - used toilet paper cannot be returned.  No exceptions.  But I guarantee if a customer called a manager and pitched a huge fit the manager would tell the employee "give them their money back" and the customer stands there all smug and smiling and you look like a total idiot.  I had a situation a few weeks ago where I upheld customer policy.  The guy pitched a royal fit and wanted to talk to someone else.  I called a manager.  He tells the manager I have an attitude, tells him what he wants which is against company policy, and the manager says 'oh yeah, we can do that'.  SMH.  I wanted to hit both of them.

I only occassionally have any Walmart workers be rude to me but they have alot to deal with and everyone has a bad day now and then.   They actually have a bad problem with rude customers and ones that purposely get them fired.

You may have a point there (unfortunately).

I think dealing with the public all day would make anyone cranky.

I think regardless of how much you make you should always show respect and put your best foot forward; how are you going to progress if you aren't the best at your current position?

I have not had any problems so far with Wal-Mart employees. I think very highly of them.  :in-love:

I read lots of the posts and I disagree that the employees treat their customers badly because they are treated badly. If you are a committed worker, you should be able to treat your customers with the respect they deserve, especially since they are not the ones making your life miserable.

Treating other people well should give you a better feeling than treating them badly because you feel bad. Try it. You'll like it.  :angel11:

I agree but it seems rudeness is being tolerable much more in our world today ...otherwise why would we be seeing so much of it?

I think it's depend on a person not at certain store.  My time at Walmart was great so I don't think that people at Walmart is rude at all.

My experience with employees at Walmart doesn't feel much different than a lot of other retailers I go to, with exception of the person who checks people's receipts near the entrance/exit. A number of people I see there always seem bored or just forcing a smile. Whenever I think about this, I always think of them as one of the people who might voice complaints about the benefits offered by the company.

Part of the problem is that employees don't have the kind of authority that a manager does.
If an employee refunded your money or accepted the return,  she may have been breaking policy and gotten into trouble.
A manager can override policy, but they should be able to satisfy the customer without making the employee look like an idiot.

I think companies put up with it because first it is not as easy as you are fired for being rude because a customer "said" you were rude and also even though there are tons of people out of work it's still not that easy to get people to work.  Most walmart jobs pay min wage and you get around 18 hours a week.  Even people who are desperate for a job for the most part are not willing to work 18 hours a week sporadically spread across 24 hours a day 7 days a week for $7.25 to $7.65 an hour.

Benefits at Walmart?  LOL.  That's funny.  Most of the employees are part time.  They do not get benefits.
