children gifts

Do you let your children know when you're buying them their Christmas gifts; or do you let them go to sleep then place the gifts by the Christmas tree on Christmas Day?

Don't really do the "Santa brought them all!" thing, but don't reveal the surprise either (which I don't think was exactly what you were talking about).
When I was younger one year "Santa" stopped by Christmas morning and brought some gifts. Some years in the past not every box would be put under the tree until that evening, secret-like, but for the most part, no don't really do the Santa thing fully. Most gifts are "from Santa" on the tag though :P

My kids are fully grown now, but when they were little I used to hide the gifts as much as possible and then place them
under the tree when they were asleep so they had a surprise to wake up to on Xmas morning. Now I do that for my grand nieces and nephew. Soon I will be a grandma, though so I will have a grandchild to do that for.

My kids are 8 and 10 and they do not know what they'll be getting for Christmas until they open their presents. Sure, I ask them what they'd like and I make a point of finding out what they would like if they could only have one present for Christmas, but they don't really know until Christmas morning. If they tell me they want something that we just can't afford, I will let them know well in advance that that particular gift will not be arriving on Christmas morning because we just can't afford it. I don't like them to be disappointment but I also want them to have a fairly realistic idea what we can afford, and what we can't.

We don't do Christmas but Hanukkah. My 12 year old knew a couple of her gifts from my mom but that is because she picked them out. But she didn't know the other from her nor me, my husband and her big sister. We wrapped them when she was out then hid them in the closet where she couldn't find them.

I usually surprise my son with a separate gift. that's aside from when I take him shopping where he gets to spend his own money after choosing what he wants.

Half and Half - they are getting things they don't know about and some things they do know about.
