Reading through the comments and seeing people mention Lego reminded me of another of my favourites.  I think it was a favourite because they were at my grandmother's house (don't know why my parents never bought it for me...maybe they figured it was good to have something interesting for me at grandma's).  I think it was called "Mini Bricks" and was kind of a poor man's version of Lego.  All I know is I had hours and hours of fun playing with them.

Slinky (I couldn't tell ya what the fascination was with that thing!), Baby Alive, Big Wheel (riding toy), Perfection game, Monopoly, Huffy bicycle. I can't remember any more. Those were good times!

Loved Play-Doh. That was fun. I never had a good slinky, only ever got the crummy plastic ones. Silly putty was okay. I played with Lite-Brite and Etch-A-Sketch and those things with the little 'wand' that had the magnet tip and the stuff inside the plastic. Also water toys with little rings or beads inside and you push the buttons to squirt the jets trying to get the rings on the pegs or the beads into the hippo's mouth (I had a hippo and a dolphin to catch rings on and some others). I also used a lot of sidewalk chalk. Tinker Toys and Lincoln Logs too. Legos have always been a favorite (but I don't much like the way they are now). There was Mr. Potato Head and I had a tricycle. Viewmasters. Ninja Turtles action figures a couple Batman action figures. Toy horses. I had some of those clacker toys, with the *bleep* on the end and you have to get a good rhythm going so they'll clack together and spark (also had several plastic versions too, which weren't so dangerous). So many other things.

I had a talk boy when I was a child like the one off the movie Home Alone. Don't know if it would be considered a classic or not but it was pretty cool.
