Cursing adult children
« on: October 31, 2014, 07:46:46 am »
I noticed how a lot of adult children curse around their parents(my husband included). I think that is kind of disrespectful even if the parents don't mind, what do you think. Do you use profanity around your parents?

I try not to, but sometimes it'll slip out. Growing up my mom was very strict about cursing (as well as some of the sports that I was in) so I started using different words when I wanted to curse like "sugar" for the S-word and "Fahrvergnügen" for the F-bomb. Since the alternate words started with the same sound, I was usually able to remember in time if I were about to utter the curse word by accident.

Personally I find very little use for curse words regardless of who's around.  I find them to be very low brow and unnecessary means of communicating displeasure.  It used to be they were used for emphasis and "shock" value, but now they are so common place, they've really lost that part of the punch.

I much prefer more elegant ways of insulting people - much like the British shows where they have the nicest way to insult you - brilliant!  And a way more intelligent means of communicating emphasis or displeasure.

Curse words really don't help a thing with exception of someone venting. As for adult children they probably curse around there parents because there parents didn't really teach them any better

Cursing is unnecessary to begin with. I find it sad for children who are raised in households where their parents swear at them. It only damages them long-term. Kids mimic their parents and idolize them (because they want to be like them). Treat your kids with respect and they'll turn out better (as well as society) for it.

I think its very disrespectful the way kids talk to their parents nowadays!  One of our grandsons talks to his mother like she's an idiot and is so disrespectful of her it makes me want to slap him!  I've told her she shouldn't put up with it but she can't seem to handle stopping it.  That's the way her ex-husband treated her for the 9-10 years they were married and its all I can do to keep from saying something to him about that!  Anyway, the grandson doesn't curse at her yet but I'm sure he will when he gets a little older; he continues to learn such behavior from his sorry excuse of a dad.

Yes it is disrespectful.  I could never even imagine cussing in front of my mother.  My brother does sometimes.

No!
Opinion: 1) a view, judgment, or appraisal formed in the mind about a particular matter 2) belief stronger than impression and less strong than positive knowledge

I'm with you guys. I never curse in front of my parents (I rarely curse anyway).
