Curfew for adult guest
« on: October 30, 2014, 09:39:21 am »
Do you think an adult staying with you should have a curfew? Do you think they should be able to come in and out of your home anytime of night?

unless they are renting the space they should have to abide by your rules as it is your house that they are staying in.

It's your castle, so you make the rules. If the person doesn't like it, then he/she can move out.

As others had indicated, it's your home, so it's reasonable to expect an adult guest to respect any curfews you have in place.

Given the individual is an adult, there could be an arrangement if there is a reason for the person to be out later than the curfew, such as, arrange for them to enter the house via a particular door and expect them to be quiet so they do not wake you up...as opposed to stumbling in loud and boisterous after a night out on the town.

If they are not able to respect your curfew or alternate arrangement considerations for coming in after curfew hours, they are welcome to sleep in some other house or hotel.

I suppose the owner of the house has the right to impose that rule if the person is willing to stay, especially if the person doesn't want to be disturbed with a knock or ring for guest who stay out, but I'm not sure this is something I would impose (and I never ran into this issue as the rare guest I do have usually go to bed earlier than myself).

I wouldn't actually have a rule or demand that the guest be back by a certain time when the guest first comes to stay. I would hope that as an adult, they would be able to figure out that being out late at night can be disturbing to the home-owner and so I wouldn't have to make such a demand upfront. However if the guest were so rude as to stay out late and wake everyone up when they came home, I'd confront them and ask them to have the decency to be back by a more reasonable hour and to be quiet when they are in my house.

Abide by house rules yes but a curfew no. They are a guest as long as they follow your rule no curfew should be applied

I think if their coming and going interfers with you in any way, they should either adjust or move out.  I also think, depending on who the adult is, that you should make a few allowances for their sake.

It may be your house and your rules, but I can't see somebody telling another adult when they can come and go.  It's not rehab.  I think it's ridiculous to expect people to do only what you want to do.

If this is a guest, I would never make an adult have a curfew.  My brother and his wife often come for a visit.  I give them a key and they are free to come and go as they please.  If they come in after we are in bed, they are very quiet and do not bother us.
