I certainly haven't been getting enough, I've been running on fumes for the last week or so. Too much work. :(

For me roughly 7 - 7.5 hours is my optimal sleep time.  I can survive on 5-6 hours for short durations, but I feel best when I get 7-7.5.  Times I get 8 hours is typically only after a day I did a lot of physical labor (workout, mow the lawn, garden, lifting heavy stuff, etc).  The times I sleep longer than 8 I'm typically sick or fighting of a sickness trying to take hold.

I've also read for those who get their sleep at night (this tip probably wouldn't work for anyone working 3rd shift), that if you fall asleep before midnight, each hour of sleep before midnight counts the same as 4 hours after midnight.  So to get a really good night's sleep, try to get to sleep before midnight.

The statement regarding the quality of sleep is true as well.  If you toss and turn for 8 hours vs getting to that state of deep sleep - the restless 8 hours won't do much good and you'll probably still feel tired.  That's probably the mental fatigue component - giving your brain enough downtime to process everything it accumulated during the day, and that's done most efficiently during a deep sleep.

Even when I get 8 hours of sleep I still wake up tired. Though I can function on as little as 4.

It be ideal to get 8-9 hours of sleep because the body heals when you sleep but honestly this day in age your lucky to see 6-8 if your lucky

I think it depends on the person, and other factors as well like age, health, etc. My father, for instance, is 51 and does a lot of walking/hiking and tries to eat well, so I think that plays a part in him being able to make it on 4-6 hours a night before he's off to work. Puts in an 8 hour day and then is able to be out until late with friends. I certainly couldn't do that!!!

I'm tired pretty much regardless of how much sleep I get, but normally manage around 7-8 a night. Ironically enough, right at this moment they're having this same discussion on The Today Show.... lol

I think it's really kinda different for everyone. Some people do just fine with 4-6 hours and others need about 10. I myself have trouble getting sleep so I sleep as much as I can when I actually can. Just the other day I slept for around 13-15 hours, which was great.
