You should get the type of dog that's right for you, when they grow up.  They won't be puppies forever so consider your situation carefully.  Do you want a running partner?  Do you want a purse sized companion?  Do you need a quiet breed because you're in an apartment?  Do you have kids or other pets?  Are you gone a lot?  You get the picture.  I can't even suggest any breeds without knowing more about your situation.  I'm sure your local shelters can help you find the perfect forever pet for you.  There's nothing like a rescued pet for loyalty and devotion.    :dog:

We got our dog from the puppy pound when he was about 8 months old but he was pretty much fully grown. He is part lab part rottweiller. He has the coloring of the rottie but the temperament of a lab. The reason I picked him? When we went to the puppy pound he was the only one that sat at the back of the kennel not minding any of the noise of the other dogs nor my kids who were running up and down the aisles poking their fingers through the cages. He didn't rise to any of my kids noisy antics and so we took him outside to the fenced area where he just sat quietly with us. We loved that he was so docile that we signed up there and then. We've now had him for five years and he has lived up to exactly what we saw in the puppy pound.

I usually find my dogs are the pound.  Twice a year they have an adoption event where all the animal adoption facilities come together.  I support the no kill facilities, but if I'm going to adopt, I have started getting older dogs that most won't adopt.  Puppies go fast.  Old dogs don't, so that's been my goal for a while now.

BUT I too want a puppy!  Love puppy breath ... it's sorta like baby breath!  Love them both.  chuckle.

As far as what type ... depends on your life style.  A puppy grows into a (basically) 2 year child that you have to take care of for 10-18 years.  Depending on the type of dog.  That's a huge commitment.  They aren't throw away things.  You can't just give it away if it doesn't fit your life style.  Research research research

Whichever you choose to get I hope you to choose to adopt from a shelter.  My youngest daughter just participated in a program at our local library.  This summers theme is paws to read.  Today therapy dogs were brought in for the children to read to them.  I didn't understand the concept when I registered her... but the idea is that young readers read to dogs to boost there confidence in reading.  One dog I know for sure was adopted from a local shelter.  He was a beagle hound and just a big softy.  If we ever bring a dog into our home we'll look at what shelters have first before ever going to a pet store again.

if you have kids make sure they are good with kids, if you get one from a shelter check it out, I would not advise to get one from a pet store to many problems :dog:

Go to the humane society or a rescue shelter and find a puppy there.  I have had wonderful experiences with mixed breeds and Heinz 57 dogs!  I personally think lab mixes are great though.

Depends on what type of home you live in and your/families temperament. What type of dog would you be interested in?

How are you doing with the first one? If you are a great dog owner that wants them for a long time commitment then why not.

You should adopt a puppy that needs a home. There are so many animals out there that get put to sleep every single day because nobody wants them.
