Spelling, English, text language
« on: May 31, 2014, 02:38:03 pm »
I know it's stylish to be just as far off from correct as you can be now but I have to say that it just irritates me when I see English words spelled incorrectly just to be cute or is it because people are not educated? I guess I'm just too old but I really get tired of seeing words like "there" used for "they're" and "their". Is it because people are not being taught spelling anymore or is it just the "in thing" now to use words like "where" for "we're" and "your" for "you're" and oh yeah how bout "are" for "our"? I guess I should just forget about it. Does it bother anybody but me?

I just now realized this was posted in the wrong category but I don't know how to move it to the off topic board. I also just noticed 28 "thanks" in just a matter of minutes...hmmm.

I have said this before and I will say this again.  Not everyone is the greatest speller and being mad about it does not help.  I have the hubby who likes to transpose (switch letters and numbers), and the difference is that I have a 6 year old grandson who is better at spelling than he is.  At times it is irritating, to say the least, but I try to be understanding. ??? ??? ??? :rainbow: :rainbow:

It's like a new way that people use for spelling now so I just adapt to it

Ah, the English language.

There are a ton of reasons for these
mistakes. People are typing fast, and
do not take the time to check their
writing.

Then, "they" do not know the grammar
or forgot about it.

I do not understand my grand son text
messages. That is Chinese to me.

The other reason is that this Forum
is international. Do not forget for some
of us, English is a second language,
may be third.

I am glad you mentioned it, I might just
be a little bit more careful next time.

It's maddening to me when people use poor spelling and poor grammar. It has irritated me since I was in grade school. America is definitely dumbing down. :-[ I know that it's not the biggest issue, but I'm in your court.

I think regarding texting, it used to be necessary to short cut, because it was charged at per character or something like that.  I agree, tho, seems the society as a whole has forgotten the spoken language as well as the written language.
