stray cats
« on: May 16, 2014, 06:20:46 am »
We have had two stray cats roaming outside our building for the last couple days.
This isn't the first time.
We can't have take them in because there are two hundred apartments in the building.
We can't have them running around; that would be chaos.
You never know where they came from and should be cautious to some extent.

Do you have a local animal humane society or similar entity?  They have the capability of finding good homes for strays and unwanted pets.  There probably is an animal control department through your city offices or law enforcement department, and if these are feral cats that are suspected of carrying diseases, that might be a better option.  They can bring out cage traps to catch and remove the animals.

I would call the animal shelter - they are very accommodating. They will be able to catch them and find out if they are micro-chipped and if they have a local owner. If not, they take them in and try to rehome them. If they do have an owner, they contact them and ask them if they want to keep them as a pet. It's the right thing to do to give the cats the best chance possible at having a good life.

Do you know if someone is feeding them? Maybe that could why the stray cats are roaming around your building.

:cat:I agree that you should call the animal control in your town. If you don't they also may end up abused. Better to give them a chance for a good home and life. :cat:

You can also try calling a rescue group in your area.  We have groups that will come out, trap the cats, have them fixed and current shots, and put them up for adoption.  If they are true feral cats and cannot be adopted out, they will release them, but at least they are fixed and you won't have tons of cats in the neighborhood.

we have a lot of stray cats in our neighborhood,,,,  we feed them in the winter but not the summer.  I think about 4 of us neighbors feed them  lol  I can't stand a skinny starving cat  :(  We even put a heavy box out in the winter time for them to sleep in when it is snowing.  These strays don't stay,,,  they eat and sleep and move on  LOL

I feed stray cats, they're usually starving.  They won't hurt you, in fact they run from people because they weren't raised in a home.  Their are feral cat groups that will pick them up and have them fixed.  Human society is a good option also.  :cat:

I would stay away from animal shelters or even the Humane Society - BOTH of these places DO put animals to sleep, no matter what it is you heard.  I know from experience.  If you really want to give these 2 cats a chance, contact a Veterinarian in your area who might be able to give a listing of Rescues that may help in trapping them.  Rescues are not-for-profit so you may need to make a small donation.

If you feed a stray cat it'll keep coming back and have more/healthier babies.  If they're feral they'll run from you, if they're tame they'll come to you.  You are in no danger from disease since diseases don't cross species.  If they're rabid they won't act normal and you would have already seen it.  How does it result in chaos to have a couple stray cats coming around?

First I'd check with the neighbors to see if they belong to someone.  Collars or not they may be someone's pets.  :cat:

Second locate a no-kill rescue/shelter to take them.  Maybe you're community has a fix and release program.  They'll still be out on the street (where they're happy), but they won't reproduce.  :peace: :cat:

We have stray cats in our neighborhood, but none of us feed them and they look well fed. I think someone has outside cats and they roam at night as cats will do and then go home for food. But we never have mice running around or in the house so guess they are good mousers.

The city I live in has a rule that you have to have your cat fixed or you could be fined. Our city over run with stray cats.

Yes, we have stray cats around our building as well. I feel terrible for them! They look so miserable, I wish I could take them all in, but obviously I can't. I don't want to call animal control in fear of them being put down, and from what I know, they usually hide out in the sewers, so I don't think they are much of a bother to anybody. I just hate to see them keep reproducing and making more kittens who will ultimately have the same problems as their parents!
