some people send things certified mail.
the post office is pretty reliable.
I can see if it's an item of value, but to send papers certified mail seems unnecessary, in my humble opinion.

My husband sends money orders in envelopes certified mail and it's for security, to make sure the  letter/MO is received and signed for. I also sent a certified letter to my town in regards to my house and I wanted to make sure they got it and did not pull any funny business with me saying that they "never got it"! So I think it makes sense for important documents. :)

If you are sending documents to a large company it is best to send it certified in order to have a receipt for proof. It seems the larger the company, the easier it is to misplace an item of mail or send it to the wrong department.
