Veterans Benefits
« on: April 02, 2014, 10:07:59 pm »
My youngest son is considered a disabled veteran and he's dealt with mental health issues since receiving an honorary discharge.

After a long wait, he began receiving Veterans benefits in the amount of $127.00 per month.  This is his only income because he's been unable to work.

I'm trying to help him understand how he can help himself.  He was just approved for a Post 9/11 GI Bill.  Has no idea what he has and I don't know, either.  We understand it's for tuition but....

does he also receive money for living expenses, rent, etc?

If you were in his shoes...

What would you do?  Who would you contact?  What could he apply for?

Thank you, in advance.
Have a great day!

If I were you I would contact Social Security.  I realize he's not 65, but he could try for disability benefits.  It's worth a try.  Good luck!

I don't know what I would do.  I am not being mean but if he has mental problems then like Nancy said he could try for disability.   It is easier to get disability for mental problems than if you have a physical disability.  Sad but true. lol.  And it is easier to get a check for mental problems if you are faking it.  Smh.

I would ask the people where he is getting the $127 from.  Again, I am not being mean but if he goes to school and then tries to get a job and has mental problems in his past it will be hard to get a job.  Idk.  I do think it is laughable that any organization would offer $127 a month.  Like you could live on that.  It's about like people who get $16 a month in food stamps.  You have lazy women who have a ton of kids and refuse to work and they get $600 to $800 a month is friggin food stamps and people who are going hungry and they get less than $20 a month.  And it is usually people who have worked or are at least trying.

And the $800 a month is NOT an exaggeration.  I use to work as a cashier and the cashier sees the amount left on the card.   Oh btw, he could probably apply for food stamps.  He probably wouldn't get much if he lives with you and doesn't have kids but even so it would be something and would help a little.

patycake, They don't help people.  That is why we have crap happening like what happened at Fort Hood AGAIN.  Said is "I" knew this was going to happen 3 weeks ago.  They said they had warnings and info that there was going to be another shooting.  Everyone who had that knowledge and done nothing to prevent this needs to be held accountable.

A lot of people play the mental card just to get out of working and to get a free check and I honestly feel like that is why they tend to write people off.  People who really need help can't get it.
