Baked potatoes are healthy, but the problem becomes different when all the other ingredients are added-now you have a problem.

The potato itself isn't bad for you...it's when you pile on the butter, bacon (yum!) and cheese (yum!!) and sour cream (yum!!!).

My husband and I like to split a small potato and use spray butter (0 calories) salt+pepper and I use my salad toppin's chaker thing from McCormick to add a crunch.

I was watching the Rachael Ray show the other day.
She had Dr. Ian Smith on her show. He stated that potatoes helped
prevent headaches. Potatoes are high in serotonin levels, that help the brain!
I personally like baked Garnet yams, they are very sweet, and do not need butter. yummy!

love potatoes,,,,,,,,,,  baked,,,, boiled,,,,,  fried,,,  love them all...  But when I fix them I leave all the junk off  lol  very little butter,,,,,  olive oil to fry them ,,,,  so I  have under 10 calories in my potato when its ready  :)

It's about the healthiest way you can eat a potato.  But once you put all the butter and sour cream on it all of that goes out the window.  And who wants to eat a baked potato without that stuff?  So, not healthy at all the way we normally eat them.

Are baked potatoes healthy? I usually add butter, cheese, bacon bits and sour cream. I add lots of it. Do you think that everything i add lessens the nutritional value? I kinda think so but i lve it so much. Baked potatoes are my favorite food right about now.
They have potassium, but they are high in carbs. Some diets claim them as a no no. I eat them and the skins. Of course if you dress them up with lots of fattening sour cream and butter and cheese, you are adding extra calories.

Potatoes of any kind are my favorite, except French fries.  Baked I just like, whipped butter without salt or pepper.  I sometimes eat the skins, but don't know if your body can digest them.

You eat them just like I do, HUM HUM Good!! As a diabetic thats not a good choice for me because it's very high in carbs. If you don't eat them much it ok.

Potato pros and cons:

Pros: Great source of potassium and fiber and they're low in sodium.  Gluten-free for those of us who need to avoid gluten.

Cons:Potatoes are considered a simple carbohydrate which means it converts to sugar and quick energy in our bodies.  People with metabolic syndrome (blood sugar problems) should probably limit the number of potatoes they consume.  The kind of carbohydrates our bodies need and want are COMPLEX carbohydrates like broccoli, cabbage and bell peppers.

That being said...Enjoy your potato.  There are worse things you could consume.

The baked potato can be rather plain without a few toppings. I think your recipe sounds fabulous.
Granted you are adding a ton of calories, but I think you know that.  I wonder if you could deep fry it.   Mmmmmm.

Yeah sure adding all the extra's make a potato not as healthy but give me a good potato with lots of butter, broc, and cheese and I'm a happy camper!

Have you tried Greek Yogurt on your baked potatoes? It is better than any other fattening topping.
