Bored with diets
« on: March 17, 2014, 08:27:13 am »
Have you every found a diet that works, but you got bored with it. I am on a good program, but find myself very bored although, I am losing weight and my blood pressure is dropping. I think it's because I miss the carbs that I cannot have and sweets. I rotate the same types of foods every week. I may have to take some cooking classes to see what else I can do to increase my interest in what I eat. :)

I think boredom is a main ingredient in any weight loss program.  Good luck with staying with it.

Melody unfortunately I have to say yes I too get bored. I was doing good, had been on a diet for about 6 months, longer then any diet before, but got tired of eating the same things, and I too had HUGE cravings for carbs, I just cant eat that cardboard bread :(

Yes, I have found that Weight Watchers works for me but I am only good for about two months of it at a time before I get bored with it and start craving stuff like potato chips and baked desserts. I do it once a year around April when spring starts popping because it is easier to go running for exercise at the same time, but poop out around the beginning of June usually. It would be great just to get down to one ideal weight and then just do what you have to to stay there.

I'm happy for your results....I can't seem to get hooked on a weight loss program that I like...I finally allow myself to love food...I have dieted so many times in the past...I watch what I eat and I walk all day at work I even take the stairs, I just can't seem to shake the weight.......I have never tried weight watchers, not sure how that would work for me.....

Good luck with your efforts.  I am trying to go to some exercise classes at our local YMCA however I have sat around for over a year since my hubby passed away and I'm in really bad shape on top of already having physical problems.  I kind of lost my appetite somewhere during the grieving process but having trouble being able to exercise.  Well here's wishing good luck to both of us because my blood pressure needs to come down for sure.

I do love my carbs ... it is truly hard to lose weight if you feel restricted, at least for me.  I've cut back on things, but pretty much, I think I eat too much period, I eat healthy but the quantity of healthy is still perhaps too much.  Like I'll eat chopped almonds & dried cranberries, cherries or raisins for a night snack, but if you eat a whole 1.5 cups ... it's probably too much and I can do that in a heart beat.

I wish you luck, if you are on a gluten free diet there are a lot of products that all in that category.  Any of course, I love my crockpot, I can cook healthy in that thing, but again, have to watch the amount.

On yes, potatoes ... red skinned, purple and sweet potatoes absorb slower and thus keep you feeling full longer because they don't affect your blood sugar they way brown skinned potatoes do ... trivia

Good luck to you in your efforts to stick with it!  Boredom is usually the number one reason a diet fails!  But, once you see the pounds coming off, it will give you the incentive to stick with it!

Thank you all for responding. I really got the dirt blues yesterday when
I was off work due to pain. I am going to try to make it through this
Process. I will start walking as soon as the weather breaks and as
Long as my knee and feet will allow me to.

The problem with a lot of "diets" is you body adapts quickly and will get "bored" if you don't change things up.  This is also true of exercising.

The good thing is your body is generally easy to trick.  Typically your body adapts within 2-3 weeks.  When you feel yourself getting bored, it's time to change things up.  For a diet, either allow yourself a day or two "vacation" and moderately give into a craving.  To minimize any "damage", if you are craving a naughty item, try to figure out what exactly is it in the item your body is missing and see if there is an alternative.  Like a lot of my chocolate cravings tend to be related to a lack of calcium - so I'll eat a bowl of steamed broccoli and the chocolate craving goes away.

If you cannot find a healthier substitute, then just give into the craving - but in moderation.  Let yourself eat that doughnut or two.  Have a bowl of ice cream.  Have a couple slices of pizza.  Then after your couple day "vacation" go back to your diet.

By shaking it up a couple days, your body should reset and think it's on a new pattern, and you should be good again for another 2-3 weeks.

Just offset the vacation by doing a little extra exercise - walk a little further, do some extra jumping jacks, etc.

With exercise - think of mixing cardio with strength.  Then switch up your strength and cardio combinations.  Do situps and pushups one week, side planks and squats another, back extensions and balance moves, mix and match you exercises after that.

Hope this helps.

Even if you cannot eat carbs, you CAN spice up your diet by taking the foods you CAN eat and preparing them in different ways. I got pretty tired of eating steamed veggies, so I started roasting them. They taste totally different, even though they are the same items...
