no teeth or dentures
« on: March 05, 2014, 06:30:34 am »
I know someone who went through the process of getting all her teeth pulled and getting fitted for dentures.
I t is quite costly. She said that her jaw isn't firm without teeth.

On the other hand, there are some people who go without.

My mom has her own teeth on the bottom but dentures on top... for many years now so I barely even notice

In this day and age it seems odd that anyone would need to have to have all their teeth pulled out.
Why couldn't they just get implants as needed.

Implants are more costly than dentures, I know because I am going to get dentures also and asked about the implants and they cost so so much more.

My grandma had all her teeth pulled out before she was 60! My aunt had some of her teeth pulled out while she was in her 50s. My family is originally from the south, so I don't know if it's a southern thing or what? ???

My husband had all his teeth pulled and dentures fitted just before he retired because he would not have dental insurance after he retired.  His teeth were pretty bad even though he had been going to the dentist regularly as he got older.  I don't even notice his dentures, and I don't think anyone else does.

I think the thing is, when you get older and your teeth are in less good condition, there are less options available to you and all of them seem to be expensive especially at a time when your income is probably reduced. Having said that, dentistry has changed so much since I was young. Now days, they are putting sealants on kids teeth in the hopes that, when they get older, they will get fewer cavities - I wish they had done that when I was young. I started getting cavities just about the same time that white fillings were coming out and I was so grateful to have the choice of white fillings.

Overall people retain their teeth better these days than the "old" people because they put fluoride in the water now.

I was prescribed fluoride for my teeth.  It came in a tube and you used it just like tooth paste.  I had to STOP using it because the fluoride was making my teeth much worse!  It's not all it's cracked up to be!

I lost my teeth when I was 16 years old because I had lactose intolerance and didn't know it at the time just for drinking or eating dairy products. I am now in my 60's and still have dentures. Sometimes I eat without them but prefer with them. I still enjoy many foods but don't eat too much beef because the cow is the premier source of milk. but all in all I am happy with my fake teeth because it always gives me a nice smile.

Well, while dentures might be "costly" they are the cheaper alternative because "implants" are way more expensive even though they are supposed to be much better.

It would be pretty hard to eat without teeth, so I would definitely have to choose teeth!!

It isn't.  And if you see somebody who has dentures and they don't have their teeth in you can tell.  Their face looks sunken.  I know a guy who went thru the same thing but after they pulled all his teeth something happened or the dentures never fit right and now he is just toothless.  I can't remember what happened that he didn't get the dentures or if he just didn't want to wear them.  I don't think he was able to get them.  It doesn't seem to bother him.  He is also pretty young.

I have very sensitive teeth. It is like $2,000.00 per tooth for implants.  If your/my mouth (lips) don't wrinkle-up/cave-in because of lack of front teeth, than I would go without teeth completely.   :sad1:
