I have a debit card from PayPal. If there is not enough money in my PayPal account, they use my primary funding source to cover it.

But is that not connected to your checking account?  Would the money not go from the checking account to paypal to the thief?

Yes but if your bank credit card is stolen, or the number is hacked, and you report it to the bank as soon as you are able, they will pay for the damage. If you have a pre-paid credit card, I don't know if the bank will pay up because presumably, you are taking the liability on yourself and away from the bank. Unless I find out otherwise, I am sticking with the bank and they can assume liability.

I guess that makes sense, I just really need to pay mine.

It seem that the use of a credit card is the best way to deal with commerce on the internet, better than debit cards. A pre-paid card seems to be a very viable alternative for those that don't have an actual bank issued card, but as mentioned I don't see why any one would use a card that cannot be 'reloaded' as it defeats the major advantage to the safety aspects being sought! :)

I use debit cards only, no credit cards. Sometimes I use a prepaid card, but they are rather a hassle, especially if they are non-reloadable. The bank gives me plenty of protection, so I'm not really that worried. Plus, I don't keep much money in my checking account.

I agree that prepaid cards are safer.  We have had a lot cc theft in our area and I have had mine compromised several times over the years.  The cc companies have been great about clearing the bogus charges and replacing my cards. The problem is getting worse and will continue to do so as we do away with cash and become a plastic only society.

I like credit cards for the cashback options, but I will not shy away from prepaid cards either if I am given one.  All the ones I've used have thus far been non-reloadable.

I have 2 credit cards, one Amex with a travel points program and one free from my bank.  But I am relying on debit cards more so I can track my money better.

I use a back credit card. Debit cards are okay but I don't like the hassle of having to download money on it. Going to different pharmacies to find a reload card was an inconvenience for me.

Prepaid cards are good for using online, but I have found a lot of businesses are also accepting payment from Paypal.  I think that is great.
