Do YOU Have Any Bad Habits or Mannerisms?
« on: January 12, 2014, 02:17:19 am »
This question came to mind when I was reviewing a topic about 'teaching manners to children' (oddly enough entitled mannerisms).

Do you have any mannerisms you'd like to stop?

I do; I am under some 'spell' that makes me think 'more writing' = 'more message-importance.' But that's often not the case.

For instance: When writing a letter of reassurance, one doesn't want to 'build a complicated thought-machine!'

Example: a friend is having difficulty with her relationship(s), and says so in even-vaguer terms. I could've just sent `m the message "REMEMBER THAT OUR FATHER GOD HAS FAITH IN YOU!" (all that one needs to know, yeah?)

... But I 'filed a missive' that started 'As much as I should be, I'm sorry.' And then started explaining God's plans-etc.

Totally unnecessary.

What bad habits do YOU have?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------That's what a Pharisee might say today. You now have the chance to respond as my mentor Jesus-of-Joseph would, and I pray that you will!

The most annoying one these days is procrastination. I recently moved and I'm just overwhelmed this time. I used to be able to set up a new household over a weekend, but this house needs to be painted, etc., and I couldn't do that before I moved in, so I just move things from one room to another and don't do more important things.

I used to be LATE all the time, lately Ive been getting better. Now I'm mostly on time. I try to give myself extra time instead of planning right down to the last minute.

I smoke... and I take long pauses when having conversations with people to try to find the exact best way to say something. The latter, isn't so much of a 'bad' habit, but it can be annoying to people who don't realize what I'm trying to do... and that I'm really doing it for their sake. :P lol

My bad habit is holding on to things I need to let go of.

I guess the reason I started this topic is--like Thufir Hawat says in DUNE--"The first step in 'avoiding a trap' (or breaking a habit) is knowing of it's existence."

Melissa's problem is one that Jesus talked about: in so-many words, 'You can't take & hold to the Kingdom of Heaven if you're busy holding onto 'your riches' or 'your past' or whatever.'

I have found out that some people just want you to agree with them, so they can feel better about their choices. Many do not accept criticism. Few are open minded. Giving your opinion can be dangerous. Beware of what you say and who could be listening when you do. Best of luck to you. We all have bad habits, but some of us want to keep them!

Well yes, everyone has some bad habits. I smoke thought i know I shouldn't. I am also a very blunt person and that does not always sit well with others.

I don't know if it's really a bad habit or anything, but I don't really speak up when I'm annoyed or frustrated.  I will be sitting at a table in a restaurant with a friend and a random guy will come up and just pull up a chair without being invited and start trying to hit on her or me.  Instead of telling him that it's rude, I just sorta ignore the questions he askes and try not to seem interested hoping that he'll get the message and move on.  I really wish I'd just speak up and say that I think it's rude that he just invites himself into our conversation and then thinks that's going to impress one of us.

My mother has told me that I start a lot of sentences with "No" a lot, but I don't really know if that's a bad thing or not.  Normally I do that (or at least I catch myself saying that) when I'm stating an opinion and the other party doesn't seem to see what I'm saying.  They will say, "so you mean this" and I'll have to explain that's not what I mean, so I say, "no, what I mean is" and then just keep talking.  I may do it in other parts of conversation, but I don't really notice it then so I don't know if it makes sense or not.
