Keep in mind also that it is not always the buisness  making these mistakes.. Sometimes their letters get stolen or people mess with their signs and rearrange the letters for no good reason..

Stupid is not a nice word, but I do use it occasionally.

Clearly you don't understand the word stupid because you have used it wrong in your own writing.. [....]  Maybe you should take the time to look up the definition of stupid before you claim others are stupid. [....] or at least i won't let myself believe i am stupid because i do not try to be dumb or ignorant..

"Dumb" is the inability to speak. Maybe you should too look up the definition before using it. Probably "Idiot" is the best word to use in this discussion since it means a person of low intelligence or someone acting as though they have low intelligence, usually in a self-defeating manner. Or "ignorant" may be appropriate if they were never taught how to spell correctly (although with a word like "salad" I'm sure they've seen it in print before so probably less likely that the person is ignorant).

What I think is that if the sign uses letters stuck to a board, then it might be a case of them not having enough 'a's to spell the word correctly. If the sign was typed in print, then it might just be a typo (in which case the blame should also be placed on the person proofing the signage before it was printed). If, however, the sign was hand-written, then I'd say that the person is an idiot and / or has a bad work-ethic. I tend to notice that more often; that if a person isn't in a high position (eg one of the servers made up the sign), then they tend to go through the motions to get a paycheck doing the minimum amount of work rather than putting in their best effort whether they are being compensated for any additional work that may be required of them to perform at their best.

I also don't think that this was a marketing ploy... Any business should attempt to work in a professional manner, esp. a restaurant. If a restaurant can't care enough to spell a word correctly (esp. one so easy to spell) then their customers are more likely to wonder what else the restaurant doesn't care about...

As Americans I don't think we are getting more stupid.  I do think we are getting lazier.  Doing things right (like spelling) isn't as important.  We are often doing a dozen things at once, none of them very well. That is just my opinion.

It is sad but funny... How ignorant people are these days...people can't even spell correct things on restaurant signs... "Soup and saled" (salad) ahem... Really???

It's a possibility the business owner(s) aren't too fluent in the English language.   They don't have to pay taxes or know how to spell.

I disagree.  I do think people are getting more stupid and more lazy.  And stupid in the sense that it is used today totally describes what people are.  People don't care.  It's not because they are multitasking.  Although when I have worked on jobs that require me to multitask I am expected to do all jobs correctly.  Any person who would spell salad as saled clearly done so because that is how it sounds so that is how they spell it.  As someone said before you it's a matter of work ethic.  I would not have someone working for me that could not spell simple words.  If you do not know how to spell something then ask someone.  Although a lot of mom and pop restaurants especially those ran by people from another country the owner is the one who put the sign up.  There was a restaurant last year in my home town that had a Crismas special and everyone laughed at them for misspelling Christmas.  The word is every where so there is no reason to spell it incorrectly.  You say it's just not that important any more.  I beg to differ.  You turn in a job application with half the words misspelled including the street you live on and see how quickly they call you in for an interview.  Spelling is extremely important.  As well as not using texting slang when filling out an application or something important such as conducting official business for a company.

I looked up stupid in the dictionary.  Here is what they have to say.

stu·pid
[stoo-pid, styoo‐] Show IPA
adjective, stu·pid·er, stu·pid·est.
1.
lacking ordinary quickness and keenness of mind; dull.
2.
characterized by or proceeding from mental dullness; foolish; senseless: a stupid question.
3.
tediously dull, especially due to lack of meaning or sense; inane; pointless: a stupid party.
4.
annoying or irritating; troublesome: Turn off that stupid radio.
5.
in a state of stupor; stupefied: stupid from fatigue.

So I agree with the first poster.  People are just plain stupid.

This is true.  But some ignorant things that people do is going to get them called stupid.  It's just how it is.
There is no excuse for not being able to spell correctly.  Spell check is every where.  lol.  I don't think it is right to call people stupid if they are trying to learn something and are having a hard time or for not knowing how to do something.  But if you are running a company you need to know how to spell the words you put on your sign.

As long as they weren't serving cats & dogs on the menu, I'd be happy with a saled!

I agree, it is very sad!  Did you ever watch the News on television and see how many misspellings there are?  It didn't used to be this way!  Now, many schools in different parts of the country have stopped teaching cursive.  Now, how in the heck are these kids going to be able to READ cursive if they don't LEARN it?  It's called the "dumbing down of America!"

I have always been a great speller and I spot misspellings all the time on posters and things. I just find it funny that people make mistakes on posters or signs that so many people will see. And sometimes it makes a funny statement at the same time.

We all have our strengths and weaknesses. I am stupid enough to correct people's grammar - almost can't help myself.  :-[
