Besides housebreaking when one was a puppy, I never did any "real" training.  The pets weren't confined to any area of the house, it's their house too so they were allowed to enjoy it and the furniture as long as they weren't destroying anything.  There was a "time out" room and they knew where it was and what a "time out" was.  Mostly if I wanted them to do something or stop doing something, I just told them (or asked) and they would.  They knew..because I had spent ALOT of quality time with them: talking to them always, teaching them new things and keeping their minds stimulated while still maintaining a regular routine for them.

The cats though...the two adults are very good!  It's the kitten that is still "a tiger in training"...lol.   He's been more trouble than any kitten I've had yet but he's definitely been worth it!!

That sounds awesome.  I tried to train my dog, he is dachshund/beagle mix.  He is very hard headed and doesn't usually listen.  I even hired a dog trainer once.  Couldn't afford it after that and he listens when he is so inclined. :dog:

I recall my late grandmother training cats and dogs not to do their business in the house.  I recall the time she was training a cat and it did its business.  She took his nose, rubbed it in the mess he made and spanked him.  He did it no more.  I can't say I am good at it because I feel sorry for it in the end. :dog: :cat:  :cat: :dog: :bad:

I have 2 year old dog. Trying to train her to give paw. It took forever to get her to sit.

We adopted our dog from the vet. She was about a year old when we got her. We are so pleased of her she is well behaved dog. We have her for almost 4 years now and she never pee or take a dump in our house. We are very fortunate and blessed. She don't bark if there's no anything suspicious.

Sound like you've done a great job training your animals.  I have been very fortunate that my animals have never tried to touch our food.  They wait very patiently to get there food and sometimes if I'm busy & forget, they will come and talk to me to let me know they are ready to eat.  It is easy to tell by the tone of there bark or growl what they are trying to tell me such as they need to go out or they want to eat.

Dogs are pack animals.  They require their pack leader (you) to give them the structure of pack rules.  It's nerve wracking to not know the rules, you can't tell when you're going to break a rule if you don't know what they are.  :dog:

My dogs are stubborn! They're like children in that I have to constantly remind them of what they need to be doing - sit, stop barking, etc... Sometimes it's overwhelming, but the key is to stay consistent and keep giving them reminders.

A friend of mine got a female kitten about 8 months ago.  It's her first after being many years without one.  I had recently asked her how it was behaving.  She said cat is doing great, that whenever the cat does something she shouldn't...she gives it a "good talking to".  Now she says the cat KNOWS what that means!  She said whenever the cat is mis-behaving, she'll say "Rosa, do you want a 'good talking to?' and the cat will immediately stop and walk away...she DON'T LIKE "talking to's"!   LOL
