Bank theives
« on: December 24, 2013, 01:54:30 am »
I was so upset to goto my bank and request a withdraw to find out my account is overdrawn due to mysterious charges. Have any of you gone through this and what did you do about it?

Itemize the mysterious charges.  Do due diligence to ensure the charges really are not yours.  Contact the bank as soon as possible and list the charges you did not make.

If you have a debit card that acts like a credit card, most likely someone hacked your card number and is ringing up charges.  After challenging the charges with your bank, most likely they will cancel your debit card immediately, then issue you a new one.

Most banks have a means to protect you and credit the fraudulent charges, but it is your responsibility to notify them as soon as possible to prevent any additional charges to your account.

I recently had that happen on mine where I was checking something on my account on an "off-schedule" day to my normal statement balancing, and noticed someone charged over $100 on a Walmart website purchase.  I contacted my bank immediately (after verifying I didn't buy anything from that website which I was fairly sure of).  The cancelled my debit card.  I had to go into the bank and write out a statement listing the fraudulent charges and what I did to verify they were not mine.  And the bank temporarily credited my account the charges pending a formal investigation from the service that issued the debit card.  And that was that.   Just waited for my replacement debit card and life went on as usual.

You can almost always expect this kind of behavior through big holidays like christmas. It's a darn shame when things like this happen and it is such a hassle to deal with. It is very important to keep up to date with what is going on in your bank. Check it often and periodically. You want to make sure you check as soon as you can after you spend money Just in case there is no fradulent charges after you spent the money and it avoids further charges. Always report any fradulent charges immedietly. Never let people get to close to you when you are swiping your cards and never let anyone see or know your pin numbers. Be cautious of people behind you and around you watching you put your pin and swipping the card. For security reasons if you ever feel like someone may have seen you put in your pin you want to contact the bank and have them keep an eye out on your account and they will issue a 24 hour/48 hour account watch( this is usually free and saves you a hassle) Make sure you keep a close eye on the news during holidays( or really any day for that matter but it usually happens more during holidays) to make sure there is no reports of any fradulent activities going on with bank cards. Keep your information safe! There is a whole lot of crazies out there without money and they ususually are desperate! I am very sorry in the end to hear about your bank problem i hope it gets resolved soon!

I did experience something similar to that. I was paying off a loan and my bank would make the payments for me every 2 weeks, through direct deposit. For some reason the bank started charging me overdraft fees. I found out that the loan I owed was taking out small deposits on the weeks after my scheduled payments. Sometimes there was not enough money to cover these small withdrawals and I was charged an overdraft fee for this. I never authorized these additional payments and was still responsible to pay the fees.

I got the situation figured out, I still need to call some numbers and ask to dispute charges, and if that doesnt work need to go back to the bank and dispute them I hope it is not too late.

We had that happen. Hubby was in a large town and we went to a retail store and a few weeks later we got a phone call from our credit card asking about some large chares that had come in on it. Well we had never made those purchases. All were cataloge orders and really costly items. But the card company credited us for everthing . Almost $3000.00. Mainly becuase they checked found where the charges  were made from. Also it was not like us to spend like that. Thank heavens.

All of the charges are legit charges.  I use to work in a bank and one of the biggest irritations I had was dealing with people who came in and their account was over drawn and thy either made mistakes in math or flat out wrote bad checks and then wanted to yell at me because THEY made a mistake.  The bank cannot just charge you money for no reason.  Most people do not read the papers they get from the bank.  Especially the ones with small print.  I know one thing we had happen a lot that people could not grasp was say for example you write a bad check to a local gas station.  The gas station gets the check back.  You are charged $30 by the bank for bouncing a check.  The gas station wants their money so they run the same check thru again.  You still do not have the money in there.  You are charged $30 again.  This will happen over and over until you go pick up the check at the gas station and give them their money.  They want their money and they have the right to it.  You got the gas they got nothing.  This is also legal.  I remember a woman who had several hundred dollars in over draft fees because they kept trying to get their money by running the check every day they got it back.  She knew it was a bad check when she wrote it.  She didn't care.  Sometimes the bank will forgive all the fees but the first one.  If you do it all the time they will not.   Some banks also charge a monthly fee which you are told about when you sign up for the account.  They can't just take money out of your account.  The best thing you can do it have online banking or go to the bank and get a printout of your account.  It will show you everything that has come and gone in the account and the numbers will match up.

You have to prove you didn't spend the money.  You can't just go in and say oh I didn't do this.  You usually have to have a police report.

Flagging your account is more trouble than it's worth.  It's better to just change your pin.  Besides that people do not need your pin.  They can run it as a credit and most places do not even make you sign it any longer.  If it is less than say $100.  I have seen people flag their account and then when they get denied somewhere they come into the bank yelling and cussing tellers and then when they finally figure out THEY are the reason for the problems they are just like "oh" "I forgot that" and don't bother to apologize for their ignorance.

This day and age it is so scary that you have to be so afraid of your identity being stolen. Then you read about the whole mess with the Target security being breached and millions of people having their info out there somewhere in the wrong peoples hands. I shopped at Target 1 time for the holidays and now I am a nervous wreck!

If you didn't really make the charges and u can prove it any bank will refund your money because any charges not made or authorized by you are not legally binding in most banks eyes so to speak  but they may ask you to close the current account and open a new one with them to be on the safe side

There is another retailer now saying the same thing happened.  Neimus Markus or whatever it is.  I never been in there.  Just heard the name.  I am sure it is not spelled right.
