Well for starters, the system is defunct as it is. There are way too many people abusing the system. And what that does is make it worse for the people that truly need it. I see it all the time where I live. I go to the supermarket and see these people with fur coats, diamond rings and food stamps. And these people have at least 4 or 5 kids, so they get money for each of them. I also see the older people, the ones that you can tell don't have anything, they get the short end of the stick. And they get limited stamps and I also have seen the store cashier tell these poor people they are not allowed this or that. But the others, the ones with the furs, get whatever they want. It is very unsettling. I can bet that the people that don't need it will still get way more than those who need it.

This is not true.  Food stamps will only buy food.  Nobody can buy anything else.  Fur coat and diamond rings don't make any difference.  Although I am doubting this.  I have never seen anybody in a fur coat using food stamps.  If they have kids they likely get welfare which is cash put on the card to buy what ever they want.  Old people can't get that.  Just available if you have kids.

I think it will help weed out the ones who are abusing the system but I feel terrible for the ones that truly need it. I know a lady who is old retired and is disabled.  she says that she only got 30 dollars this month. with her being on a really strict budget she has only eaten one meal a day for quite a while well plus a small snack she says she just will eat one meal a day  and just half  of that and save the other half for tomorrow.  she doesn't have any family to help her out.
I think they need to change something like the code of the system and really direct to those people that are wounded. Not people that are stay here and gaining weight. :bad: :bad:

it is hard to make a choice between food or medicine.  or food and car insurance.  or food and the electric bill :bad:  my boyfriend works construction.  since cold weather and the holidays he's only been working 2 0r 3 days a week, but because he actually has a job we are not eligible for govt assistance.

That's a very sad story! About the reduction I guess it is what it is. There is not much we can do about.

Messed up for some families that really need it and screw it for some families who over take the food stamp system even though they have enough to buy whatever they need already.

And if the churches had been doing such a great job, food stamps would not have been needed.

It's not the place of the churches to provide food for every dead beat who will not work.  I know way too many people who have went into a church and told a lie to get money that was used for drugs not food.  Thus the reason churches quit helping when people randomly asked.  I am not defending the churches or attacking them.  It just irritates me when people (most of which don't even believe in God) want to blame the churches for people being hungry and homeless and not putting the blame on the person who will not work.  I seen 4 different people outside my workplace Saturday holding various signs about hungry, will work for food, need money anything helps.  Yet NONE of the dead beats holding a sign will go into where I work and fill out an application.  And yes we are hiring.

What are the churches for, then? Building huge mega-churches and putting satellites in space so they can broadcast around the world??

I never saw where Jesus said anything about that.

I did see where he told Peter, "Feed my sheep."

Churches are supposed to be representatives of God in the world. And if the churches care more about their buildings and their status than they do about people in trouble, then I can't blame people for not believing in God.

The Bible also says if a man will not work then neither should he eat.  It makes me mad that people want to slam churches and Christians then expect them, many of whom are struggling themselves, to just give them a handout because they want it.
[/quote]

That scripture was written for a specific circumstance, in a specific time. It wasn't a directive from God.
I slam churches and Christians for not doing their jobs.

What makes you think these people aren't willing to work? And what makes you think that working is going to allow them enough to not need food stamps, or help?

Have you not read about Walmart employees being told by management to sign up for food stamps or Medicaid? Government assistance shouldn't be needed if you're working, but as long as billion dollar companies don't pay a living wage, the government (read taxpayers) continues to subsidize their employees.

I believe that the dopes that vote this stuff in should have to also live by it.  Not get perks after perks after perks.  They do not have to be on regular social security, they have their own.  They do not have to live on the same health insurance they have "special".  Once they leave office they continue to get their salaries.  Cut back on unemployment benefits, but do not do anything to actually get more jobs out there that pay livable wages.  I have been out off work for a while now, they only want you to work part time, so that they do not have to supply benefits, oh and if you are part time they can also pay you less.  I guess they think you are just there for the entertainment.   I have had several jobs for 4-8 months where they have me clean up or set up an accounting system, train the employees and then tell me they don't need me anymore. This has been really a bummer situation after having the same job with the same company for over 25 years.  They were sold, with the stipulation that the staff was part of the deal, at  6 months we were all let go.

I definitely feel terrible for those who are elderly and on a fixed income, however I think all of these programs should be terminated immediately and not offered again until there are fail safes in place to ensure the system abusers are cut off. I think that only people who have contributed to society should be eligible, with those with legitimate disabilities being the exception. Mandatory random drug screens should be conducted as well. In addition there should be restrictions put into place as to what can be bought. People who work for a living can eat just fine using coupons and eating the store brands, so I think only store brands should be allowed to be purchased. There should also be caps put on the price of meat. Filet mignon and crab legs are not a staple when you are on a budget, therefore should not be allowed. Junk food, like ice cream and potato chips are novelty items and should be excluded. A certain portion should of produce should be mandatory monthly. There is nothing wrong with putting restrictions on items purchased, the WIC program does it to all their recipients. I realize not everyone on these types of programs are taking advantage, but far too many are. I am really sick of seeing people receiving assistance living better than taxpayers. I assume I should not run for a public office, as my opinions would probably be too politically incorrect.
