People in retirement do you have trouble meeting your budget?
« on: October 15, 2013, 11:30:52 pm »
My husband and I are both retired and are really have a bad time meeting our budget. we had a ton of medical bills and someone helped us pay them. but that shouldn't be that way we should get enough to survive. and now they are talking about ending it. what then do we live on the street? This has got me really upset because I worked until I retired and  so did my husband. we put in that money so why are they threating us to end it.

Also, your retirement is based on what you earned while you were working.  I have never heard of being able to just "END" your retirement.  If you are talking about "social security" they aren't going to end that.  The best thing people can do is buy a house and work toward paying off the mortgage so it is one less bill you will have when you are old.
A lot of financial advisers say it is better to rent.  These people are idiots who obviously have rental property and want people to pay them all their lives to live in THEIR house.  If you buy a home eventually it will be YOURS and you won't have that payment any longer.  Also, you don't have to ask somebody else what you are allowed to do.

yeah i understand..my husband draws a disability check..hes 57..i quit work in 2001 to keep my granddaughter when she was born..my daughter pays me a little but most of it goes for gas to get them at school and a snack and some left over..but now they are talking about maybe letting her and her sister stay at home next year until my daughter gets home..we would just drop them off at home and my granddaughters would stay there until her or my son in law get there..it wouldn't be but about an hour maybe an hour and a half..but that cuts mine out.and we need to move from the neighborhood we are in because its getting bad,but we cant afford to..i have health issues and cant work..and being 52 who is gonna hire me over a younger one with better health..it's a big rat race..doomed either way..

I agree, retired people have it hard in this world. I know for myself as well as my elderly parents, meeting a monthly budget is a major task.

I had to retire early for health reasons, so my pension is very small. Thank God I have savings, or I'd be SOL.

Yes - it is difficult to meet our budget.  Costs go up but the income doesn't  :angry7:

Unless you can actually afford to buy a house, it's absolutely better to rent. I think you're overlooking all the other expenses of owning your own home beyond the mortgage payment.

Hubby and i are both on social security also, His check is a lot more then mine even tho i have worked all of my adult life. The govenment did not credit me any of the social security that my late ex-husband and i paid in because it was done jointly so he got it all.  And let me tell you i worked my tail off besides raising 2 boys. I was on that tractor at the crack of dawn and did all the rest of what goes into farming and ranching. Plus when we had ranch hands for another rancher and farmer that we worked for. At time i was cooking for 9-15 of them, and that was three meals aday. Plus helping outside.  But as usual women get the short end of the deal. So when i moved out and was on my own for years is what i got paid on. But we have managed to buy our own home and have almost paid it off in 5 years by adding to the princple every month. It is hard but it is ours until they decide to take it away from us. By that i mean the govenment. The way it is going the illeagles are going to need places to live and us old folks don't mean any thing any more. Oh yeah Hubby woeks part time as a sub at school and they keep him busy. That extra money really helps. Wish i could but the old back won't let me.

This economy has made it difficult for most people to make their budgets. People have taken pay cuts and pay higher medical to keep their jobs and cost of living increases have been stopped. Yet the price of everything we buy has increased. Hopefully things will turn around eventually.

I'm retired, as is my husband.  Between our social security and pensions we are doing ok, just ok.  It's not what I thought retirement was suppose to be, believe me, after both of us working all our adult lives we are not living the "good life".  Now social security is going to give us a 1% pay raise! but the cost of living is raising more than that.  Soon our oil will start to come, I guess we can pay that with our large 1 % increase. :'(
