Windows 8 - pros & cons? Do you have it?
« on: October 14, 2013, 02:50:55 pm »
My new machine for work has Windows 8 on it which I have never used.  It doesn't have a swipe screen or touch screen, so I have to use the mouse for the apps on the home screen.  It'll take some getting used to, this Windows 8, that's for sure!   :-\

I personally think that Windows 8 is more designed to work with a touch screen or pen tablet set up.  It made sense to make things very compact and easily accessible when used on a phone or tablet, but most computers now a days are so powerful that you don't need to have everything at a quick glance.  It's convenient, but not the major focus of owning a computer.

The thing that turned me off of it was that the desktop was not the main feature any more.  The app screen would be nice as a secondary screen that could be pulled up over the desktop to quickly view things, but they designed it to be that the app screen is the main screen and the desktop is secondary, which bugged me.  I haven't used Windows 8 yet, but when I was buying my computer, I was planning on using specific programs, which I didn't know how they would work with this new Windows.  Would they become an app themselves or would they be icons on the desktop part?  If Word and Excel are apps, what else will be one?  And there really isn't anything that explains how things would be arranged, whether they automatically become an app or we can choose which programs to put on app screen or just desktop or both.

Plus, I wanted to arrange my storage devices so that my Operating system and programs were stored on my Solid State Drive while the rest of my data would be stored on my Hard Drive.  No one had a way of doing that when Windows 8 came out, so unless someone figured that out recently, it makes it hard for those who want to set their computer up a certain way to do that.

I like my Win 8. I have had it for a few months now and I have this program that bring back the Old desktop screen and able to go to my programs like you would on win xp. I also use the Win 8 apps desktop. It is really cool.  :) :cat:

Yeah, I have it. But I still use the classic desktop look. Someday I will look into it some more. When I
find the time to do so.

I have windows 7 on my desk top.  But I have windows 8 on my laptop.  I do not like it at all.  But I need the laptop for a business I have and need 5 take it with me when I am on the go.  I have gotten some use to it but I am not crazy about it.  Oh well.  Hope everyone has a wonderful day and may God bless each of you and keep you safe.

My PC has Vista.  I'm behind! LOL

I loved reading all the comments about Windows 8.  On the notebook, for work, it does have a section that looks like the old desktop with a few icons.  I may use that more than anything, if I can keep shortcuts to programs there.

I have Windows 8. For me the pros are that it's fast and has beats audio. But as a former XP user for me a con is the graphical changes. I really wished I could have taken Windows 8 speed and paired it with the appearance and usage of XP. I liked how the Start Menu was set up in XP, the desktop button being visible, the gif and wmf images being viewed more easily in the Windows picture viewer, etc. I really didn't like how with programs in Windows 8 that you have to go to the start screen and only see an option to add the program to the start or taskbar rather than add a shortcut to the desktop. I had to figure out a workaround by opening the file location and right clicking the icon and sending a shortcut to desktop. Some users may not have known to do this and might have found this confusing. It's just personal preference, but I still prefer the appearance of XP.

I got a new computer in July with windows 8 and I didn't think I would like it. Now that I have gotten used to it I like it pretty good.  I am still learning how to use some of the apps.

I am absolutely LOVING Windows 8!  I don't have the "touch screen," either, but I have to say it wasn't hard at all getting used to it.  I waited purposely so that I could get Windows 8 (since my old machine was Windows XP and that will become obsolete on April 14, 2014).  I can't say that I'm disappointed at all!  It looked a little challenging at first but, truthfully, I knew my way around it within a couple of days.  I'm really happy with it!
