While I am not a federal worker, I do work for a Government Contract in the Northern Virginia area, and I am furloughed.  And even when the government opens their doors I will not be paid back since we are just contractors and not federal employees.  Thank God my hubby works for a private company, but still we leave on a budget and with no $$ coming in from my pay, I cannot pay the mortgage, the car, the utilities and feed my family.  Something is going to have to give, call the car they are allowing me to skip 1 month but I cannot ask for more than that.  Called BOA for the mortgage they told me that I have to wait about 10 days for them to call and analyze my situation.  Filed for Unemployment  but the pay is not going to be enough.

And the congress does not want to open the government.  I have 2 teenagers that play sports and need to be feed in school.  My family is SUFFERING and they do not care, I heard one of them say that the shutdown is the best thing for the country, since it is saving money and since we have "Live in a recession for so long, it really does not affect families as much as you may think", really come to my house look at my refrigerator, better yet go to the houses of the single parents that depend of their salaries to feed their children, I at least have my hubby whom is getting 1 steady pay check.

tashamjoy, We went out west. Headed towards to Grand Canyon and it was closed. So we drove through the Painted Desert and up into the Rockie Mountains. Everything that was "federal" at all was closed by some sort of barricade or lock with a sign stating that "due to funding shortage it was closed". And as I said earlier this included the restrooms on the side of the road in the remote areas we were in, so you can imagine what a mess that is causing.

not me personally but i think it's crap they are shutting down places that create revenue....people should really question themselves if they think obamacare is a good thing.  There is a reason why he's being so persistant on pushing it through...think about it.

Fortunately, I have not experienced any complications due to the shutdown. I thought there would be more issues, but I guess not!

Yes, a road to Mt Shasta was closed because of the shutdown. And Joshua Tree forest was also closed. These are places that people that live in their campers stay.

Great question!! I was wondering this myself.  It's unfair that government workers' pay suffers from something that's not their fault but let's just hope that a compromise is reached soon and the shut down lifted.

It's no different than when a company goes on strike. ALL the workers are effected even if they are on the picket line or if they don't agree with the situation.  I do not agree with people being paid to sit at home.

Government workers aren't suffering.  They're applying for unemployment compensation in droves and they'll get paid for not working when they go back.  Seems to me they're doing rather well for themselves and they already get paid more than private sector workers.  Now they get double.

IF they are going to be paid for the time off then they cannot draw unemployment.  Unless they don't have to follow the same rules the rest of us do.

I think today was a good day they are coming to an agreement on something .they will let the debt limit rise what ever that means. noticed the stock matket recover good for folks with 401k's.

It means we as a country can borrow more money from China so we can give millions more to other countries.  As of now we have reached the limit we were allowed to borrow.  They are wanting to raise the limit by a few million so we can get farther in debt.  When I reach the limit on my credit cards I am told NO more.  PAY what you owe.

My brother in-law's ex called him last night and told him of this incident.  Here in Mississippi, the people who got Food Stamps on October 12 (yesterday) were informed that they could not use them because no stores were taking them except Wal-Mart. Then one of our church's parishioners also brought up the issue today.  Whatever glitch it was seemed to be resolved, because the State said they can go anywhere with Food Stamps.  The State is part of the government, and I don't know what happened, but I am glad it is resolved.  I think of the children whose families depend on Food  Stamps to eat, and I wonder why the Government would have a family have to struggle and go without.  Makes you wonder. ??? ??? ??? :o :o :o

I am retired Military and retired Govt - I have not seen a disruption yet but, may find a problem if it lasts past 1 nov. I have some savings that could hold me off for about a month but, if it goes beyond 1 dec, I may have a problem but, then probably will the rest of the country if we go that far. I have not seen any problems in my travel and I traveled from VA to NJ and VA to SC since the close down and did not see any disruption at all. I would stay away from DC right now though. I doubt you can do anything in that town right now.

All companies that rely on the gov't to pay its employees should have an emergency gov't shut down fund set aside for times like these. It's no fun to have to worry about how you're gonna feed your family and pay your bills and not knowing when the shut down is going to end.  :BangHead:
