Why do people find it necessary..
« on: October 10, 2013, 06:54:15 am »
to ridicule people for their spelling or grammar?

I read a post yesterday that had a word misspelled.
Rather than answer the question asked, the responses were all about the spelling and grammar.

I mean, c'mon! If the question was clear enough that you understood what was being asked, why respond negatively?

Why make someone try to feel stupid for asking a question or posting?
Why hurt someones' feelings because they misspelled a word?

I don't get it.  ???

And wound up showing THEIR ignorance. Going on about people not using spell check on their computers, and then misspelling grammar in their own post.

I just think it's rude.

Imagine that person has a vote in our congress and reps. Then think of the people we have in office now. Commonsense jumps in and says no wonder we have such idiots in office today. If they are that critical of spelling imagine what they miss for who represent us and forgive them of their political gain from money who can give a rat about the people or their spelling.

I know.  So rude.  We need to consider that we do have a vast variety of folks in our little community here.  Some may speak a little on the Spanglish side, some may be a little ghetto, or throw in a little of their Yiddish Hebrew heritage, or come from any number of heritages.  Some people do write as they speak, but if you can get the point of the post, why not just simply carry on the conversation of the thread?  On the other hand, though, you are right.  I have seen not many, but just a few posts that I could really make neither heads nor tails of, but in that instance I replied with something like "If what you mean is...then I think..."

I don't think it's beneficial to anyone to go around being ignorant of things. The question to me is, why do people fight so hard to stay ignorant? If you're informed of something you didn't know before, you're now a little bit wiser because of it. I don't see that as a bad thing at all.

We look at those doing the correcting, and yes, sometimes they can just be d&%# heads trying to act superior, but never question why the one being corrected gets so so offended by learning something new.

So if someone simply corrects you, just say "thanks". If they're being rude however, say "thanks, you pretentious dbag".

with all the abbreviations being used  - instant messaging  & texting - who can tell if anything is misspelled or just deliberately changed to shorten it  :dontknow:

Those are the people who would not help a person with an injury alone on the street. Their nature has to change soon it would seem as the earth is changing and those kind of folks will be left behind.  :angel11:

Spelling mistakes are not something that I pay much attention to, most of us are not professional typist. However, if a word is misspelled in a way that renders a different meaning than what I 'think' the poster intends, I might mention it, but not abusively. NOW, misspelled words are one thing, people writing posts that make absolutely NO SENSE is a matter that drives me crazy!! I don't expect perfect grammar on a web exchange (I do on any job application that is brought to me), but gracious I almost scream when someone can't construct a couple of sentences that even remotely make sense! Rant over...  ;D

It may have been unintentional.  I am a speller, but I realize that not everyone can spell.  Things like that gets on their nerves.  It doesn't bother me because some people think spelling is a big deal.  Yet, to capitalize on someone's spelling would tend to be hurtful, as well as cruel.  That is no reason to go out of your way to hurt someone's feelings because they could have made a typographical error. ??? ??? ???

I understand if people never learned and they just don't know how.  At least they try anyway, but some of what I see is simply text speak and that tends to bother me.  I think text language is appropriate for text messages, but doesn't give people the excuse to use it everywhere.  I have heard that teachers are getting essays with text speak now.

The other thing that drives me nuts-

I work for two mystery shopping companies.  We send out emails about our shops.  I get at least two emails per day, where someone replies to my email of a shop offer from a smartphone, but they do not realize that my original message will not be included in the reply.  So the message I get look like this:

I want that shop.

Oh, really?  Let me look through the 600 I have open and try to figure out who you are and which one you want.

It's not necessary, but if you're in an in-depth conversation online and some person comes in "and tipes like htis and there upinion is reely skewed and meen-spirited and they r being rood" it's kind of annoying to read. But if you've only misspelled a few things, the vast majority of users do not care. Those people that do care are known as "Grammar Nazis".

If you write in such a way that it makes it hard to make sense of what you're writing, then I could understand people correcting you.

If you have a couple of misspellings or you left out a word (something I tend to do a lot), it's no big issue in my opinion.

Some people look for the wrong in everything - and that's their issue not yours.

The way I look at it is this. We are on an internet forum, and the people here are from all over, from different cultures, different educational levels.

When someone takes the time to post a question, or join a conversation, what they say is more important than how they say it.

The only thing ridicule ever taught is "Keep your mouth shut."
