I gotta agree with most everyone else on this one.  Warm gooey brownies right out of the oven.  With an ice cold glass of milk.  It's true cupcakes are so much more versatile and have that whimsical look to them.  But someone on the first page of this thread said, "who ever heard of red velvet brownies?"  That's a darn good point.  The poor brownie has gotten overlooked.  I think this may be a challenge to all of us home cooks... break off the traditional brownie and experiment with new flavors.  Who knows, maybe after putting for efforts in this quest, I may just decide to stick with the classic brownie - it works.

This is going to be an odd answer, but I'll take cupcakes over brownies because of the mediocrity of cupcakes.

I absolutely love a good brownie when done just right. When it's nice and chewy and has the right tasting chocolate, it's perfect. I've had bad brownies though. The chocolate wasn't right and/or they were either too hard or too cakey or too thin. So much can go wrong. When they're great they great, when they're bad they're bad. I just hate the disappointment. I love'em warm. Things can go wrong when they cool off too. Leave'em in the wrong place and you've got a thick cookie (assuming they had any height to them to begin with... then they're just a cookie).

Cupcakes on the other hand, I've never had a bad one but I don't think there's such a thing as a "good" one either. They just are what they are. It takes a lot to get them wrong. They do their job. I can't be disappointed because I have average expectations for them. I can take them warm or not. Doesn't really matter.

My vote goes to cupcake. Impressively average.
