I will start back working part time. It took me six months to find this part time job. How long it takes for you to find a job?
Well done on having a part-time job at least. My poor husband has sadly been furloughed as of midnight because of the government shutdown. So as of now, we have no income (not even delayed income) until the government sort their issues out.
However, this aside, I used to work in recruitment (for 10 years). There was many people seeking work/alternative work and so few jobs around. For every vacancy there would be 200+ eligible applicants interested in the vacancy (and many hundreds of others who were interested but not eligible). Clearly only one applicant can get the job and whilst there are many people who seem less qualified, either because they don't have the skills or don't have any recent experience to bring to the table, it was always disheartening for me to inform candidates that the job had been offered elsewhere.
The best advice I can give is, at interview, be yourself. This is when you are at your most confident - playing yourself. Try to do a little background work on the company prior to interview - this will show that you are interested. If you're not getting interviews, always add a covering letter to your resume to highlight areas that might not be obvious from your resume.... I used to work with that equipment at 'Company X' but it may not be listed on my resume as there were so many other parts of that role. Also, if you don't have some experience that the job requires, you could say 'I haven't covered that particular thing you're asking for but I understand it is somewhat similar to this other thing I have..'. In addition, a resume is great at highlighting your previous experience but it doesn't bring 'you' to life. Try to add some particulars about your personal self... ie that you are self motivated, able to work under pressure, have the ability to think latterally. Everybody has qualities, so brag about them.
Hope this helps for anybody who's job hunting!
