I've driven with my family from Florida to New Hampshire. It's about 1100 miles. It takes about a day to drive straight through. I just came back from a trip to there and I flew. Without layovers it would only take 3 hours or so.

The longest road trip I've ever taken was relatively short compared to doing a circle of the US which I've always wanted to do. We went from RI up to the Blue ridge Mountains and down through the Smokey Mountains, up through Tennessee and into Kentucky through West Virginia then back home.

The longest trip I have ever taken was when I flew from Minnesota to Germany.  My son was stationed at the Army base in Kitzingen, Germany.  He and his fiance had a 2 week leave from their first tour in Iraq and asked if I would come to Germany rather than for them to come to Minnesota.

I said YES!

I went to Costa Rica for a senior assignment. We cleaned up trails in a rain forest when former UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, was supposed to visit. His helicopter landed nearby, but we were not allowed to even get near or see him at all. Security and all that, you know. How disappointing!

Not that I would have been so awestruck to see him. But it would have nice to hear him say, thanks for cleaning up the trails. You know what I mean?

FYI: The rain forests in Costa Rica look just like our forests. They just have some different wildlife, like iguanas, monkeys, poisonous frogs and scorpions. And they have some beautiful flowers. Other than that, they look just like our forests. I don't know what I was expecting, but I was surprised at that.

The only other big surprise was a regular sand beach on one side of the coastline and a black sand beach on the other side. Interestingly, they're not very far apart. AND you are not supposed to use toilet paper in their toilets. Of course, all the beach toilets had toilet paper backed up in the toilets because Americans cannot do what they're told.  :angry7:

The mountains there are beautiful, but I think all mountains are beautiful.

If I count my International trip, then from my country to here it is somewhere around 2,000 miles  flying.  But within the US I have driven from Northern Virginia to Panama City, FL and it took almost 24 hours just with breaks in between.  The longest drive of my life.

I have two very long road-trips, although one is by far the longest (and I doubt I'll ever come close to duplicating again).

The not-as-long one was when a friend of mine -- whose birthday is only a few days after mine -- and I decided to take  road-trip to Florida for our birthdays. We had friends that just moved down there, and before they had moved, they let us borrow some speakers for a party, so we used that trip to return the speakers and visit our friends. But we also knew some people that lived in Maryland (close to DC) so we took a long detour driving almost straight East from MN to PA and then south to their house for a couple of days, before continuing on our way to FL.

But the longest was when I was in Boy Scouts when we had a cross-country road-trip from NY (where I was living at the time) to the Philmont Scout Ranch in NM. We took a month to make the entire trip, making several stops at various different sites along the way, including going to the Football Hall of Fame in Ohio, watching a Royals baseball game in Kansas City, and visiting the top of Pikes Peak (not to mention the week-long backpacking hike once we got to the Scout ranch).

What was really interesting for me was that our family was in the process of moving from NY to MN at the time, so I actually started the trip in NY, but then got dropped off at my new home in MN on the way back!

Back in the '70's I had opportunity to go with friends on a European tour.  I think it was 17 days long-- or maybe 17 countries.  It was great to see some of the things you have read about.

From the Caribe to Madrid, Spain in an old Super G-Constellation airplane. We made a pit stop at the Azores Islands to refuel. It took forever. But no regrets: I was in heavens all the time!

Longest trips time-wise were 2 camping trips I took as a kid.  The first was a 6-week camping tour of the southwest US.  Started in WI, traveled down along the Mississippi to Texas, across the southern boarder.  We got to walk across the boarder, around a block on the other side in Mexico, then back State side so we could say we "visited" another country.  Continued to CA, went as far north as San Francisco, then started heading east.  Got the southern "mid" states, back to the Mississippi, and home again.  Stopped at several caves and museums, and interesting parks and experiences along the way.

Second to that was a 5-week camping trip of the southeast, where we traveled from WI diagonally to the East Coast, south of DC.  Hit the Carolinas, northern FL/southern GA, across the Gulf coast.  Got to the Mississippi and headed north.  Got to visit plantations (including the one in S. Carolina used in the mini-series "North and South"), met the large mosquitos of Mississippi and Louisiana, and took a trip up the Arch (St. Louis).

If we're talking longest trip distance, it might be a tie between my cruise to Alaska (starting from WI to Vancouver, CA, up to Anchorage via many glaciers), or my cruises to the Caribbean (WI to FL to islands in the ocean)...maybe my HS trip to Mexico may be in the running too...

I must say there are many well-traveled people on Fusion Cash.  I'm quite envious.  :P Count yourself extremely fortunate.
